Thanks for your query, and our apologies for the delay.

In the situation described, it seems that the DOI agency, e.g. Crossref, would be the best system to consult.

When a publisher has submitted an article to Crossref, and included in its metadata is the author’s ORCID iD which was authenticated via OAuth during submission, then that ORCID iD will be available when you query Crossref with that DOI.

An example can be seen in 10.1016/j.neuroimage.2016.03.027

When one queries Crossref for the metadata (in json), one will find the ORCID iD of the author:
      https://api.crossref.org/v1/works/http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.neuroimage.2016.03.027

With regards to reference managers, this is a question that was raised by the working group on the display of iDs in articles. If you’d like further information on this, please contact support@orcid.org.

Finally, with regards to compliance with style guides: in the case of creating a citation of another published work, is…

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

Since you’ve first submitted this suggestion, we’ve improved the appearance of the search bar, and are now working on the affiliations search. You can follow progress on the Current Development Trello at:
          https://trello.com/c/7OywbDz8/3102

We have also started working on adding an affiliation search field to the advanced search options: https://orcid.org/orcid-search/search You can find it on the advanced search page, however there is not yet a column which displays the affiliation listing in the search results.

Finally, you can also use the basic search page (the default search option from the search bar) to create SOLR queries covering the same options as the public API. A Public API tutorial is available at:
          https://members.orcid.org/api/tutorial/search-orcid-registry

          Warm regards,
          ORCID Community Team

Search results provide a mix-up of first names and family names. Sometimes the list is impossibly long. Could there, in addition to the single search field, be added an advanced search that allows searching by family name plus and initial?

This is a good idea. Some citation styles require identification of last author.

Thanks for submitting your idea to improve the ORCID Registry. Starting the week of Nov 12, and continuing weekly through December the Registry Stability Working Group will meet to help us prioritize all the functions and bugs that have been submitted, at that time you might see the status of your idea change after the Working Group assigns it a priority. While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. The full process of how an idea turns into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided?

ORCID works with the involvement and support of the community, and we appreciate your taking the time to help make the Registry better. In the three weeks since our launch, we’ve received a lot of great suggestions for the…

Once the basic structure of importing tag-defined metadata (like RIS) is finished, it will be trivial to also allow ENW-tagged format metadata (native EndNote export format) to also be imported.

It would also be quite nice to allow the _export_ of ORCID lists in standard formats (BibTeX, ENW, MODS, RIS, etc.). Further, it would be great to have one's ORCID works listed in the page head in both unAPI and COinS formats for direct automated import into Citavi, Mendeley, Papers, Zotero, and others.
