UI changes needed for the new affiliation categories and the future of the record UI
As a representative of an ORCID member organisation, we've already applauded the new affiliation categories rolling out with V3.x of the ORCID API. We're encouraged by the gradual improvement in the ORCID record reflection of the actions and characteristics of what makes a contemporary researcher.
Distinctions, invited positions, membership, qualifications, and especially service, are all great to see.
However, I'm not convinced that the way these nested categories are being represented at launch with each item tagged with its type is really working, e.g.,.
Education and Qualifications
- Study #1
Education - Study #2
Education - Certificate #1
Qualification - Study #3
Education
Funding ...
That's particularly quirky with Employment which doesn't have any subcategories.
Now I'm not at all a UX person, but it seems like some effort is needed to make the record's display manageable especially given the likely ever increasing complexity it will need to represent.
As a suggestion, and if clustered of related types is kept, how about:
Education and Qualifications
Education
- Study #1
- Study #2
- Study #3
Qualification
- Certificate #1
Funding ...
No doubt someone with a better design sense can improve on this even more.
