Thanks for this interesting idea. Using the Gravatar feature more extensively could be a great addition to ORCID and possibly solve another idea to add photographs of researchers (see http://support.orcid.org/forums/175591-orcid-ideas-forum/suggestions/3318444-why-don-t-you-add-a-photograph-of-the-researcher) However, we don’t think we’ll be able to find a way to use the Gravatar feature more thoroghly in the near future. As we won’t get to this idea for several months we’re putting it into the "postpone” category so that you can have your votes back to indicate your interest in other ideas. We will take another look once we get through several other ideas that are on our list.

If you are interested in seeing what we are currently working on, we invite you to take a look at our development boards at https://trello.com/orcid2. Please contact us if you have any questions.

It's a good proposal, I just tested the concept on http://orcid.org/0000-0003-2016-4208 Ideally Gravatar (= Wordpress) could add ORCID to their "verified services" to check claimed IDs with OAuth. For that it would have to be a "triusted [insert term]" here, so far it might simple. Actually using Gravatars here requires new code. Remotely related, there's also an OpenID on the ORCID ID linked above, this could be also checked (OpenID was a predecessor of OAuth)

For values of "here" not including this forum, where Gravatars connected with e-mail addresses obviously work.. [Edit: removed OpenID discussed elsewhere, added "works for me" wrt this forum.]
