I believe many systems simply integrate against the ISO 3166 standard for countries in the world. According to their data Kosovo is an autonomous region as part of Serbia. https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#iso:code:3166:RS If you check other resources, it shows that the status is still debated https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_recognition_of_Kosovo

While the status of Kosovo is indeed disputed, it is recognised as an independent nation by the majority of other countries. People who identify as Kosovan should be able to express that.

As part of our efforts to follow community best practices, we use existing standards and guidelines wherever possible. This includes using the ISO (International Organization for Standards) list of country codes for countries included in the ORCID Registry. More information on this list can be found at: https://www.iso.org/iso-3166-country-codes.html.

However, as a community-led organization, we also want to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our users and members. We will therefore add other countries to this list, if asked to do so by an ORCID member organization.

If you work for an organization that is an ORCID member, or regularly use one or more of our members’ integrations, we encourage you to contact them with your request. For a full list of current members, please see: https://orcid.org/members.
