    • A 'report this' button is implemented to prevent spamming the registry

      I searched the ORCID registry for "school" and lots of spam 'profiles' for driving schools, yoga schools, etc came up in the search results. For example:

      ORCID has a process that runs each week aiming to identify potential suspect records, but it is dependent on keywords. I propose that ORCID implement a 'report this' button and we can crowdsource getting rid of these spam profiles?

      • Console to manage API credentials

        Managing API credentials, redirect URIs etc is cumbersome work for both ORCid Support in making changes and integrators and software developers requesting for changes. Google-style console to manage API credentials and properties associated to them would ease workflows for both parties.

          Currently individual ORCID record holders can manage their ORCID Public API credentials by clicking Development Tools on the registry navigation (direct link: https://orcid.org/developer-tools).

        • Develop tagging and filtering to support funding application requirements

          It seems relatively common that online grant/fellowship application systems ask the applicant to enter a list of works that is more specific than the complete list available on an ORCID profile. For example, some just want just journal articles, or just pubmed-indexed articles, or they want a separate list of works that arose from their previous funding, etc.

          If users could tag their works and then provide a link to a list of works filtered by specific tags, then I think there would be a real possibility of funders changing their application requirements to allow such links in place of…

            Books with the work identifier ISBN do not merge, if ISBNs are formally different. Formally different could mean hyphens or not, and 10 digits or 13.

            • Add a preprint field to direct to openly available versions of a work

              Please consider adding a new field for a preprint identifier or link that could be added to existing works. This would allow someone visiting a profile to find an openly accessible version of a work (e.g., journal or conference paper).

              In many fields, "green open access" is more practical than "gold open access" due to a lack of recognized OA journals. Thus, many authors wanting to make a paper available will submit it to a preprint server (such as arXiv, figshare, or Zenodo) in addition to publishing in a traditional (closed) journal.

                That said, do note that it is currently possible to import a work that is available from Figshare and Zenodo to the ORCID record via Datacite (see e.g. this document shared by ImpactStory http://goo.gl/Fjn8x ). : )

              • Mark up lists correctly

                Please use list markup for lists of names, websites, other IDs, or keywords. This is not only semantically correct, per HTML specifications, but also improves accessibility for people using assistive software to access web pages.

                Names would be best shown with each starting a new line (the present method can lead to confusion), but it is possible to style lists of keywords so that they are presented horizontally, with a visual separator such as a mid-dot. For websites and other DS, it is possible to style lists as at present, without bullets.

                • Improve search, regarding double letters

                  One of the commonest spellings of names which contain double letters, such as my surname, Mabbett, is to omit one if the letters.

                  Search for neither "Andy Mabbet" nor "Andy Mabett" finds my ORCID record.

                  The search algorithm should handle such cases.

                    • Create a visual flow sheet for ORCID and what sites/account it connects to

                      When I started research I signed up for an annoying number of aggregating/indexing sites, most of which connect to ORCID (researcherID, Scopus, uberwizard). But some of which don't, or have limited functionality with ORCID (NCBI, Google Scholar) or are considered social networking sites for adults (LinkedIN and ResearchGate). I couldn't keep them all straight, so I created a flow sheet for their interconnectedness. I would love to see an official flow sheet from you guys, even including sites that you DON'T currently connect to so that people don't spend 30 minutes trying to figure out how to link the two.…

                        This is a great idea that we would like to get to, but which would require a bit of work with a good design team to tackle.

                        We’re going to mark it as under review as we look into potential solutions.

                        In the meantime, it would be great if those interest could offer suggestions of what you would expect to see in such chart.

                        For example, what types of systems should be displayed? There are those systems which are evidently connected to ORCID from the Search & Link wizards on the Registry user interface, and there are other systems. There are other systems which are open to the public and allow users to connect their ORCID iDs, but which do not first start from the ORCID Registry. There are also closed systems — such as institutional systems or manuscript submission…

                        At the moment my ORCID record is ordered with 'Education' at the top, followed by things like employment, funding and 'works'.

                        I would like to have my publications ('works') at the top of my profile instead of at the bottom, but there doesn't seem to be a way that I can change the order of the boxes.

                        I could set all the other boxes to 'private' so that only my publications show up, but I don't want to simply hide all the other information.

                            Currently work identifiers, like DOIs, arXivIDs, PubMed IDs and PMC IDs, are all treated as links in the user interface, but handles are not linked. This means that we feel it necessary to upload the handle both as a work identifier and as a URL, which is unnecessary duplication of information.                                     Just to give an update on this: Reviewing the contributor roles in the ORCID Registry, and how or where researchers or organisations assert those roles, is a part of our goals in 2017. Watch this space for more information in the coming year.

                                    Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry. We have been collaborating with Mozilla Science Lab, BioMed Central (BMC), Public Library of Science (PLoS), the Wellcome Trust, and Digital Science, among others, to develop a prototype for assigning badges to individuals based on the contributor role vocabulary developed by Project CRediT in 2015. ORCID will be incorporating these contributor roles into our Registry. For each contribution (such as an article, dataset, or presentation) connected to and displayed on an ORCID record, the record holder will be able to select their role(s) they played from the Project CRediT list.

                                  • Process existing works with DOIs when co-authors later get ORCID

                                    I noticed that API responses have "contributor-orcid" for works. There are examples where co-authors have independently added the same works after having created their ORCIDs. This is enough information to process and unambiguously populate "contributor-orcid". Doing so would make for a richer interface on orcid.org (ie navigate co-authors) as well as potentially fewer hits on your API.

                                      This is falling into a larger conversation that we need to have with the community about the “contributor” role in items in the ORCID Registry. We are currently marking this as “under review” as we gather your suggestions on how this should proceed.

                                      It would be helpful to obtain ideas from the community on how this might work. Some starting questions:
                                      When should a organisation updating an ORCID record with works data populate the contributor-orcid field? Only in the case when that contributor has previously authenticated their ORCID iD to the organisation?
                                      Should unauthenticated ORCID iDs be transferred in such field, should that iD be flagged and asked to claim the item?

                                          We have implemented the first phase of this improvement. Now when you choose a work type related to a non-journal publication, the field display title for “Journal title” will dynamically update to a relevant title, e.g. “Conference title”, “Book title”, and “Publisher”.

                                          There has been an additional call for the form to dynamically update based on the work category selected, e.g. choosing the category “Conference” would change the field display name of “Journal title” to “Conference title”. At present, one must first choose the category “Conference” and then one of the conference work types in order for the title to dynamically update.

                                          The ORCID Statistics page needs immediate attention. ORCID should be able to provide the numbers by category (funder, publisher, research institution, academy, society, etc.), by region and country at any time.
