ORCID iDeas Forum

Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. I deplore the use of hackneyed challenge questions, such as 'mother's maiden name', the answers to which can be looked up in Who's Who.

More enlightened institutions allow you to compose your own question as well as the answer, such as "Uncle George's bridge partner?"

But an alternative is to forget about the password altogether. Simply enter your username to cause an email to be sent, click on the link in the email and you are logged in! To accept or decline a review invitation can work just this way.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We’re going to add this to our list of improvements to consider for the future and will update here accordingly.

    • ORCID account have a search facility for the works

ORCID account should have a search facility for the works so that it could become easier for an account holder to navigate through the works and manage them.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We require further information in order to consider this iDea. Do you wish to use the normal ORCID Search to search for works? If so, this is possible — here is a search using a DOI: https://orcid.org/orcid-search/quick-search/?searchQuery=10.23640%2F07243.4905773

Could you confirm whether you want this to be more obvious? For example, an option to search by work identifier or work title on the Advanced Search page https://orcid.org/orcid-search/search

Or do you mean that the user should be able to search through their own works that they have already added to their personal ORCID record? If so, what would you expect to be able to search, and how?

Many thanks for input for you and from the community.

        Warm regards,
        ORCID Community Team

      • search results pages should indicate which results have public data

An earlier ticket [1] was, I believe, closed on a misunderstanding. We are not asking for any private data to be made pubic, but simply for search results pages to give an indication of which results include some public data; ideally with a summary, but otherwise with a tick or similar mark.

        • Style visited links distinctively

If I perform a search, say:

          https://orcid.org/orcid-search/quick-search?searchQuery=Emma+Jones

then visit one of the links given in the results; then go back to the search page (or repeat the search), the link I visited still has the same styling as before.

ORCID's CSS is overriding the default styling for visited links, which would otherwise render differently to links that have not been visited.

          Please remove this override.

          • Could you please provide an additional field for checksums?

When electronic texts are referenced, they often have urn, doi or other persistent identifiers in repositories or e-journals. Not always do those repositories or journals create publicly available checksums. So could you provide an additional field for entering checksums for files? And options to choose for type of checksum. md5, SHA2-256, SHA3-256 and so on. Thank you very much

            • Group DOIs with case insensitive comparison to resolve works duplication

I think that when comparing the DOIs of works to decide what to group, you aren't parsing them to be case insensitive using ASCII case folding for comparison of text.
              https://www.doi.org/doi_handbook/2_Numbering.html#2.4
The doi:10.1002/14651858.CD001730.pub3 is equivalent to doi:10.1002/14651858.cd001730.pub3
but Scopus and CrossRef are using these two different presentations, which then list as separate works in ORCID.
Although in this this case I can create a manual entry with the Scopus ID and the DOI as listed by CrossRef, I shouldn't have to and the Scopus presentation of the DOI is the one preferred by the publisher.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

Currently the ORCID Registry processes all identifiers as being case sensitive. This is a known issue — some identifiers are case sensitive, whilst others are not.

Our team recognize this issue and will be addressing it by cataloguing our identifiers, their case sensitivity, and other validity issues, then putting these into effect and potentially sharing some of the data in the identifiers API (https://pub.orcid.org/v2.0/identifiers/ ).

We currently have looking into the identifiers scheduled to commence April 2017 and shall update you when we are further into the project.

                Warm regards,

              • API v2.0 be allowed to update the biography as API v1.2 currently can

We're beginning a project asked for by our academics to allow them to have an on campus "research hub" that can then push details of their publications, funding, etc out to the myriad of different third party services they use, including ORCID. As part of the early stage development of this I've got some code running the successfully updates a user's biography in ORCID via the v1.2 API in the sandbox. Works well.

I've now read that API v1.2 will be retired later in 2017, so tried to move my code to API v2.0 in the sandbox. Unfortunately in v2.0…

Thanks for your suggestion to improve upcoming versions of the ORCID API.

Unlike most other parts of the ORCID record, the biography is a single field — it hasn’t a put code as it exists only in the singular. So to update it, your system would need to fully overwrite the biography, potentially removing what the user has already input.

The rationale behind not having the biography field be editable by any party other than the user is the same as why users cannot edit data that a client application has added: only the source of the data should be able to edit that data.

Could you provide some suggestions for consideration of how this could benefit users and workflows that could work for all parties?

                  Thank you.

                  Warm regards,
                  ORCID Community Team

                • Place more controls on DOI entry and group more DOI variants together

Place controls on how DOIs are entered in the manual entry form so that only the DOI (not the link form of the DOI can be entered). Right now people can enter a DOI in the forms "http://dx.doi.org/DOI" or "http://doi.org/DOI" and these will end up in their record and will not be grouped properly with duplicate records from other sources. Another fix would be to treat "http://dx.doi.org/DOI", "https://dx.doi.org/DOI", "https://doi.org/DOI", and "http://doi.org/DOI" as duplicates of DOI for the purposes of grouping.

Thanks for your suggestion for improving the Registry.

Our policy is to not change data that the user or member has added to the Registry. Once thing we can do is set the automatic URL that will be displayed when members or users only add the identifier and not the identifier URL. Earlier this year we updated this so the default is https://doi.org/[DOI] rather than https://dx.doi.org/[DOI]. See: https://trello.com/c/OfYenJ21/3137

We’re also preparing a review for identifier validation and case sensitivity. (See also: https://support.orcid.org/forums/175591/suggestions/16897273 ) We’ll take this into consideration as we approach this with respect to DOIs and other identifiers.

We’ll update this post when we have more information to share. Thanks again for your suggestion!

                  • Allow users to grant organizations permissions granularly

Currently when an ORCID member organization requests permission to access an individual's ORCID record, the user can only authorize all permissions for the long term, for a single instance, or not at all. A user also has the ability to revoke granted permissions from their personal account settings.

It would be great if users could instead grant permissions granuarly, e.g. with checkboxes or sliders. Users could authorize the organization to read their ORCID iD and trusted party-visible data on their ORCID records, but not grant access to update their biographical or activities sections of their ORCID records.

                    In addition, it…

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry. We are going to put the idea under review by our team.

Regarding granular permissions: It would be great if you could provide additional suggestions on how this might work, or examples of similar practice by other systems.

Regarding panel to set defaults: This may be better for a new iDea. If this were implemented, it would likely be less granular than proposed as there are now only two permission scopes for an organization to add or edit data on ORCID records: /person/update (add/edit biographical details) and /activities/update (add/edit activities e.g. affiliations, funding, works, peer review). In addition, reading data on the ORCID record has record-wide permissions: /read-public or /read-limited.

                      Warm regards,

                    • Author ORCID IDs from DOIs?

I am responsible for SafetyLit (short for safety literature). We were an ORCID launch partner.

Bachground: Although many journal publishers not accept or require an ORCID for each author with each manuscript submission, and these are often printed with the author affiliation; these ORCID IDs are not always available among the metadata for download. This is because personal bibliographic managemenrt software (EndNote, Mandeley, Zotero, etc.) do not capture ORCID IDs.

                      My need:
Is there a system available to enter a publication's DOI (say in CrossRef) and obtain each author's ORCID ID? This would be a boon to author name disambiguation…

Thanks for your query, and our apologies for the delay.

In the situation described, it seems that the DOI agency, e.g. Crossref, would be the best system to consult.

When a publisher has submitted an article to Crossref, and included in its metadata is the author’s ORCID iD which was authenticated via OAuth during submission, then that ORCID iD will be available when you query Crossref with that DOI.

An example can be seen in 10.1016/j.neuroimage.2016.03.027

When one queries Crossref for the metadata (in json), one will find the ORCID iD of the author:
                        https://api.crossref.org/v1/works/http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.neuroimage.2016.03.027

With regards to reference managers, this is a question that was raised by the working group on the display of iDs in articles. If you’d like further information on this, please contact support@orcid.org.

Finally, with regards to compliance with style guides: in the case of creating a citation of another published work, is…

                      • Including ORCID in metadata markup for web pages

                        Hello;

I have spent some time recently looking at adding metadata to my publication pages on my webpage that facilitate sharing on linkedin, google+, facebook, and twitter and that also provide extra information to google scholar and altmetrics.com. Altmetrics checks mendeley.com and mendeley.com lists my ORCID.

Further integration could be useful in 2 ways:
                        1) allowing for inclusion of ORCID for each author in markup for Google Scholar (google scholar supports Highwire Press markup of the form citiation_author, citation_title, etc.) -- an additional markup tag such as citation_ORCID (for example) could help to provide ORCID information to google scholar.
                        2)…

                          Thank you for the suggestion.

                        • the separators for the ORCID be figure dashes

A figure dash is the same width as a digit and makes numbers separated by dashes easier to read. A figure dash is ‒ in HTML. In practice most other people will use hyphens and search engines should match either.

Or, the classes have to be created based on the xsd (which might introduce error prone code)
Or, the classes are copied from pre-generated sources such as the ORCID-SOURCE github project?

if there was a single concatenated maven dependency that contained these classes to use for the unmarshalling, the actual implementation would be a lot cleaner, would avoid possibilities for accidental breaking because of explicit class-changes and A LOT faster.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID API

We’re going to add this to our list of improvements to consider for the future and will update here accordingly.

                            • ORCiD inbox links to actual works, not entire list

The Inbox currently shows which service has updated my Work section, and presents a link 'View on your record'. That link shows the entire list of works (for me, it basically goes to https://orcid.org/my-orcid). I often cannot find which work was added. It would be great if somehow that could be made transparent, ideally by opening up the relevant work(s) in a separate window/page.

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

At present, the current stable version of the ORCID API, v1.2, does not make it possible to clearly state which items have been added or updated to the ORCID record via the ORCID API. (This is what such notifications are indicating.)

The simplest method to determine what was added or updated at present is by checking the creation date (via more details view). The modification date can also be viewed via the ORCID public API.

The API version currently in development, v2.0, supports the addition and updating of individual works items. It is possible that this could result in more informative notifications.

We would appreciate hearing further suggestions on how the addition/update notifications can improve. What information do you expect to see in them?

For added security, you could consider implementing two-factor authentication.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

Offering two-factor authentication is a feature that we are considering for the coming year. Follow our process at: https://trello.com/c/Qep41Vg5/13

In the meantime, if you would to use two-factor authentication to sign in, we would suggest linking a support social or institutional account which offers two-factor authentication. You can read more about alternative sign in options at:

                                  • Allow users to define default preferred source for works, e.g. Scopus, then CrossRef, then...

Users may use multiple sources to find all research outputs, e.g. Scopus, CrossRef, etc.. The metadata from these may vary and some may be more suitable for export to other systems, e.g. Elsevier's PURE.

It would be useful to allow users to set a default preferred source (or priority order) for the online sources they have set up. At present, the user can only change the preferred source, case by case, for each output.

                                    • More information about why a researcher should sign up for an ORCID

ORCID is a great system - and, as a publisher, I love it when researchers use it - but there is little/no material on the website (eg in 'for researchers' section, or in FAQ) as to why authors would be motivated to sign up... we have had comments like 'oh, it's just another academia.edu' and 'oh, it's just another research gate' when we have tried to explain... there needs to be some information we can hand to them about why this would help them further their career, or get credit for their work, or make connections, or (most importantly) help…

Thanks for your suggestion for improving the ORCID Registry and related websites.

We’ve some further information on communicating ORCID to researches (see: http://www.slideshare.net/ORCIDSlides/overview-of-orcid-for-researchers and http://www.slideshare.net/ORCIDSlides/spreading-the-orcid-word-orcid-communications-webinar-june-2016), but improving resources on our main site is also on our to do list.

It’s also one of the topics for our upcoming videos in our How To? ORCID video series, see:
                                        https://orcid.uservoice.com/admin/forums/390876/suggestions/15531693

We’ll update this thread accordingly as we make further updates to ORCID for researches.

                                        Warm regards,
                                        ORCID Community Engagement and Support

                                      • A 'report this' button is implemented to prevent spamming the registry

I searched the ORCID registry for "school" and lots of spam 'profiles' for driving schools, yoga schools, etc came up in the search results. For example:

                                        http://orcid.org/0000-0001-7582-2402
                                        http://orcid.org/0000-0001-9587-8075
                                        http://orcid.org/0000-0001-6240-8560

ORCID has a process that runs each week aiming to identify potential suspect records, but it is dependent on keywords. I propose that ORCID implement a 'report this' button and we can crowdsource getting rid of these spam profiles?

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We shall put this as a feature under review. Let us know if you have any suggestions for how this may appear on the ORCID record.

For now, please continue to report any suspect records to support@orcid.org, as well as any suggested keywords to add to our regular spam search.

                                            Hello,

Thank you for your suggestion for improving the ORCID Registry.

Could you suggest some layouts that you would expect to see as an email signature? And by ‘ORCID logo’, might you refer to the ORCID iD icon? (Green circle with the white iD)

                                            Thank you.

                                            Warm regards,
