Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. One uncomfortable point

When I input the details of my work, if I hit a mouse outside of the framework, everything I did disappears. This is really annoying.
I appreciate that if you could fix this problem

We’re sorry you’ve had trouble importing your works manually. We encourage you to use the ‘Import Works’ functionality as that tends to be much more user-friendly than adding the works manually.

    • List the refereed publised works separately from the other published works

It is great that the Orcid website lets you include all of your works, including nucleotide database entries, blog posts and so on, but what ultimately counts on a CV is the list of refereed publications. It would thus be good to have a way to separate at least the refereed publications from the rest. I realise that a previous post suggested implementing a way of sorting things dynamically, but this would be more of a static thing (and thus easier to implement), with the refereed publications listed separately from other published works, much like grants are listed separately from…

Thanks for the suggestion, however this is something ORCID can’t take on at this time. Right now we don’t collect information about if works are refereed or not and it’s not something we can tell from the work metadata we do have. We are looking at additional ways of sorting publications, but refereed status isn’t a criteria we can use for sorting at this time.

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately this is not in the direction ORCID is heading at this point as we are providing unique identifiers. Thanks again!

        • Allow batch entry of works via structured template (e.g. csv)

My publications aren't in any of your listed sources. So I need to enter my publications manually. I click on this option and find I have to enter them one by one. 20 or so fields 40 times. Arrgh! How about allowing batch uploads of multiple records at once using a simple structured document format, e.g. .csv. New users could then upload all their existing publications in a single action. I am not sure I have the patience to do this initial record-by-record upload :-)

            Hi,

Just letting you know that we now offer a new tool to batch enter works form BibTeX format. For information about that tool see http://support.orcid.org/knowledgebase/articles/390530. In addition the list of tools you can use to automatically import works from our member databases has also increased, see http://support.orcid.org/knowledgebase/articles/188278

With these new tools available we will not be working on a way to add works from a csv file, so I’m closing this iDea. Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback.

            Thanks,

The list of work types offered in ORCID is from the CASRAI Output Standards, which you can find out more about at http://dictionary.casrai.org/research-personnel-profile/contributions/outputs.
Rather than trying to maintain an inclusive list of work-types, ORCID has decided to use this vocabulary so we can focus on our main goal of providing unique identifiers. As the CASRAI vocabulary is update, we will also updated the work-type options in ORCID.

            • Generating CV and metrics

Enable the site to generate a sheet with the ORCID logo and membership and list of publications, to add on to a CV. A dashboard with some metrics such as citations, downloads (like in ImpactStory) or networks / world map of research collaborations would be useful, too.
Thank you for the ORCID site, in anycase.

                Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion. While we may be able to add a tool for exporting works in a text forma at a later time, it doesn’t fit with our current development priorities so I’m declining this idea for now. Right now our development work is focused on building links between ORCID and other systems and completing more functionality within the Registry, like adding affiliations and grant.

As for metrics, that’s addresses in another idea at http://support.orcid.org/forums/175591-orcid-ideas-forum/suggestions/3316029-provide-citation-counts-from-third-parties-e-g-

We’ve just update the list of work types offered in ORCID. The list is now from the CASRAI Output Standards, which you can find out more about at http://dictionary.casrai.org/research-personnel-profile/contributions/outputs.
Rather than trying to maintain an inclusive list of work-types, ORCID has decided to use this vocabulary so we can focus on our main goal of providing unique identifiers.

While there is not a category just for media or outreach projects I invite you take a look at the new list, as it is much more comprehensive and may have another category that will work for you.

Thanks for the suggestion, but we want to keep ORCID urls as a unique identifier that does not change. By leaving names out of ORCID identifiers, the URL won’t become outdated if you change your name and won’t confuse anyone if there is another researcher who uses the handle mmeadows on another system. ORCID is about ensuring persistent unique identifiers and as part of that we want to keep our URLs as a sixteen digit identifier than never changes.

                  • Latests Publications based on Keywords or Field of Study

Wouldn't it be great for the researchers to see the latest publications in their field of studies. A billboard like applet could easily keep track of the field for the author and could easily scroll latest publications in a small window, and author could check the applet while updating his/her profile before or after submitting new publications of her/his. It is possible to inform researchers without disturbing them with other methods.

Thanks for the suggestion. We really like the idea of a map with links to ORCID Records, but it’s not something our team has time to pursue right now. Our current priorities are finishing promised functionality, like affiliations and grants, and building more connections between other systems and ORCID. In the meantime you might want to check out ORCIDLive! at http://orcidlive.org/ which uses our webhooks functionality for a similar project.

ORCID doesn’t maintain a database of works ourselves. Instead we rely on our partners, listed on the Import Work window, to let users import works to their ORCID accounts from their databases. If you have not I would suggest check each of the four import tools to see if they have your older publications.

                            • Different work groups

Try to launch this website just like a social network for researchers. Create different work groups (say Medicinal chemistry) with a prominent scientist to be its co-ordinator with which researchers can discuss their problems regarding a particular sunject (say Medicinal chemistry). This co-ordinator can then invite different researchers in the same field and will create his own team based on the impact of work of distinguished researchers.

Thanks for the suggestion. Creating a social network for researchers is a great idea, but it is outside of ORCID’s current scope. Right now we’re focused on completing functionality central to ORCID’s goal of providing unique identifiers like building more connections between ORCID and other system and completing planned functionality, like grants and affiliations. But we can revisit this suggestion once we have time to look into other activities.

                              • Reference

Launch an free online software which can directly assempble a refrence into the format suitable for a particular journal. this will definitely decrease the time taken by an author to publish its work.

                                • consent page at once rather than individual papers

                                  hi
quick search found some 900 publications (should be between 200 and 300), which have to be individually consented. way too much work. Would be good if this can be done more efficiently, e.g. for groups of papers.

                                    Hi,

I think you are looking at one of our member’s integrations that lets you import works into ORCID. ORCID doesn’t provide a list of publications directly.

To add all 900 of your works, I would suggest trying another tool as both the Scopus Import Wizard and Europe PubMed should let you import a large number of works without selecting each one individually. More about these tools is at http://support.orcid.org/knowledgebase/articles/188278-import-works-website-user

                                    Best,
                                    -Catalina

Thanks for the suggestion. We can definitely see the use for an undo import feature, but after talking with our development team we’ve decided it’s not something can easily add to the Registry. But we are working on a select all option which would let you delete or change the privacy setting of a number of works at once which might help with correct and import that did not go as expected.

                                    • Base your XML Schema on the CrossRef or DataCite XML Schema

You seem define a new XML Schema for your return type in your API. Rather than proliferate the standards we have to support, why not use the CrossRef schema http://www.crossref.org/schema/info/CrossRefSchemaDocumentation4.1.0.pdf, or the dataCite schema, http://schema.datacite.org/, or at least offer data in these formats?

For instance, a major feature I'd love to see in ORCID is the ability to add my datasets by DOI and (open access) arXiv preprints and associate them with the publications they refer to, so that they appear as a single "research object". It appears that your data model has no concept of such associations…

Thanks for the well written suggestion. When creating the ORCID Messages Schema we tried to follow existing schema whenever possible, but much of the data ORCID capture’s isn’t include in the other standards which is why we needed a new schema.

But I will pass on your suggestion about a having an option for a “Research Object” option. Next time we review the schema I’ll make sure that is considered.

                                        Thanks,

                                        • Allow manually entry of or linking to citations of our works

Google Scholar fails to capture many citations of my work, and there is no way I can "point" to these other works and get them linked to my work to show that they have cited me. It would be great if we could manually list works that cite our works, esp. if that data could then be harvested into Google Scholar.

Thanks for the iDea, but right now ORCID does include not include citation counts or h-indexes. We may expand to include this at a later time, but for now our focus is on creating unique identifiers for researchers and integrating those identifiers into other systems. I suggest you explore other tools designed to provide citation counts for the type of information you are looking for.
