ORCID iDeas Forum

Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. To upload full article.....

I started using ORCID from last 2 days. My suggestion is if possible then give chance to upload full article not only abstract. it is become very helpful to researchers and other persions.

Thanks for submitting your idea to improve the ORCID Registry. A number of people have asked about uploading full text.

ORCID is focused on linking individuals with research works using minimal metadata. Our goal is to embed the ORCID iD in the work itself so it becomes easier to search for and identify who has done what, and provide a reliable link to the work.

While we point to works, we do not plan to store abstracts or full text. This would be a databasing effort encompassing not just storage but also archiving and data preservation —a huge effort that is beyond the scope of ORCID, and frankly would duplicate existing repositories.

Instead, by providing a standard name identifier ORCID can improve interoperability and help to break down the barriers between existing repositories, benefiting the research community as a whole.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

      Cheers,

Thank you for submitting your idea to improve the ORCID Registry. We agree that impact factors and other measures of research impact are important and can be improved by use of the ORCID registry. However, usage stats are not in scope for ORCID. Instead, we encourage third parties to use ORCID data to derive usage statistics.

In fact, algorithms for measuring usage are being implemented by a number of organizations, several of which are benefiting from ORCID data. In addition, there are a number of sites that are (or will soon be) consuming ORCID data to support calculation of a whole range of research metrics. Check out the Impact Story or PLOS websites for example.

      • use ISO 8601 in the forum

currently in the forum the US format is used, e.g. "December 16, 2014"

Use the international ISO 8601 format instead.

        • Allow users to flag publications as "not mine" in the crossref list.

The automated list of possible publications produces lots of false positives (especially if, like me, you have a common name). It would be good not to have to wade through the same ones time and time again looking for your new publication to add... so some mechanism to select "this is not me" for each publication would be nice.

          • to improve everything

Currently this is a very bad system with very limited options. it should allow users to do everything, including export from/import to any imaginable sources and databases. all imaginable types of data sorting (by size, by date, by citation number, in alphabetical order of the authors, titles, etc.), to find duplications, to contact people, to post publications, pictures, etc. Briefly, it should combine all oprions of Scopus and Web of knowledge with those of Facebook.

We are working to improve ORCID and address many of your concerns, but we are not trying to make ORCID be everything to everyone.

ORCID is a registry that allows you to connect information together, it’s not a profile system. Our goals is to give researchers an iD that they can use through in their research workflow as a way to help identify their work. Our long term planning does include many of your suggestions, but right now we are focused on bringing in new partners and and making connections to other system. But we do release new versions of the system every week and, if you are interested, you can see many of the ideas you suggestion on our public development planning boards at https://trello.com/orcid2

            • You have not fixed the 'edit' problem at all.

It took me until today to figure out that what ORCID calls letting users edit works manually is NOT editing the work, it is creating a copy and adding data to the copy.

This is SO NOT WHAT I or many others were asking for.

When I said 'edit', I meant EDIT, not create added complexity that makes no sense to the casual user.

DO NOT mark this 'closed' and claim that it is the same thing as what you did with the branching icon.

                Thanks for your feedback.

From early on data provenance has been an important component to the ORCID Registry. The source of the metadata is important to many who access ORCID information from the registry, particularly since many return to the original source to obtain supplemental information about the item, for example, to access additional metadata that is not stored in the ORCID databases. Provenance is recorded at the item level (for example, an article, dataset or employment listing.) To keep provenance clear, only the source of data can edit the content of the data, though the individual whose record it appears on always has the option to change the visibility or completely remove the item. With this rule, users may enable their trusted organizations to update things that the organization added without fear of their edits being overwritten.

To accommodate the need to have clear provenance, yet still allow individuals…

              • You add marking patterns for serial publications

The YYYY-MM-DD marking pattern is too restrictive. It does not allow proper entry of journals which use other marking patterns, for example a year volume/number pattern. Here is an example:

                Science & Technology Libraries, Vol. 26, No. 3/4, 2006, 111-135

Thanks for the suggestion. The date field is intended just to capture the data the work was created or published, it is not designed to hold journal and volume number.

For this type of information, and any other fields that are not explicitly captured in the ORCID metadata, we suggest using the citation field. The citation field is free text and can capture any additional information that is not recorded elsewhere.

                • .. provide a way for a reader to comment on FAQ articles, or to ask a new question

The link on the page about ISNI to the ISNI FAQ is broken. But I was only given the options to say the page is useful, or that it is not, but not to be more specific.

Also, I was unable to find anything on the ORCID site about creating an ORCID for deceased researchers. Is there a policy and mechanism for this?

                    Hi,

Our support site at support.orcid.org is through a platform from UserVoice, so we only have the options that provides to us for now. But if you send us any documentation issue as a support request we’ll fix them right away (and I did just fix the broken link you caught).

ORCID records must be created by the researcher themselves, as such ORCID iDs are not issued to deceased researchers. Our policy on deceased researchers who have created ORCID iDs is in section 9 of our privacy policy at http://orcid.org/privacy-policy

                      Hi,

Unfortunately ORCID is unable to offer support over phone at this time. We’re a start up company with a very small support department (just two people right now!) working with researchers around the world and it’s just not possible for us to offer assistance via phone at this time. But if you send us your issue at support@orcid.org or submit it though the question mark icon in the lower right on orcid.org pages we’ll be happy to help.

                        Hi,

I wanted to follow up and let you know that I was mistaken when I said this was a bug. The orcid.org site uses cookies to remember which language you selected for future visits, but on your initial visit to orcid.org the default language is English.

This decision was made on the advice of our translation contractor who told us the best practice is to present a website in it’s native language and allow users to select another language. If you know of any best practices that advise using browser settings instead, please let us know and we can review this decision.

                          Hi,

Following a conversation with the folks at CDL, we’ve decided not to add EZIDs as an indentifier type. As EZIDs are either DOIs or ARKs
those fields can be used for adding these identifiers and having them correctly resolve to the object.

This is a great suggestion. We’re looking into adding an option for EZID to an upcoming version of our schema. To help us put this in place, can you tell us how EZIDs should be resolved into a URL to provide a link to the dataset?

                          Thanks,

Thanks for your suggestion. I agree that suggesting similar publications can be very helpful to researchers, but it’s outside of ORCID’s scope to provide unique identifiers. We may consider they idea at a future time, but for now we don’t have the resources to pursue it.

                              Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion. While we may be able to add a tool for exporting works in a text forma at a later time, it doesn’t fit with our current development priorities so I’m declining this idea for now. Right now our development work is focused on building links between ORCID and other systems and completing more functionality within the Registry, like adding affiliations and grant.

As for metrics, that’s addresses in another idea at http://support.orcid.org/forums/175591-orcid-ideas-forum/suggestions/3316029-provide-citation-counts-from-third-parties-e-g-

It would be easy to extract from a database of names the gender of the author. The list of allowed names at each country is public and authors could easily confirm o change the information. The bibliometric networks separated by gender could be a useful tool for redressing inequalities.

This is an interesting idea, but not our focus at the moment. Perhaps this would be a good use of the public data file that will be published in October. While there isn’t a gender field in the data you may able to get information based on the names, which, as the commenter mentioned, often indicate gender.

                              • Give up on bibliography management

ORCID had its public launch 6 months ago and building a bibliography here is still not sufferable for anyone that has more than a handful of publications. (The duplicates issue; maybe also the middle initial issue still.) On the other hand there are fine services through which a researcher can establish a public identity, for example Google Scholar, Research Gate and (starting up) Microsoft Academic Search (and Scopus and Research ID too). I suggest that it should be adequate if ORCID just offers the researcher a page where the person identifies him or herself, with links to whatever other service…

Providing bibliographic information is one way ORCID helps distinguish researchers. By providing a list of works as part of an ORCID records researchers are able not just to identify themselves by name but by the publications they are associated with. But we agree- there are a lot of other services out there that provide excellent bibliographic management- and ORCID isn’t try to replace them.

                                • get rid of upfront registration!

I was just about to give it a try but it turns I need to register to do so. Not interested anymore!

With all the new ideas and tools coming up everyday I shouldn't need more than 5 seconds to try yours.

I'm giving you some feedback because I like your web tool, even though this took me longer than 5 sec.

                                  Good luck!

Sorry you didn’t give ORCID a try. The ORCID Registry is organized around individual iDs and the functions we provide, like importing works and linking to other system, are tied to unique profiles. Other than search, there isn’t any functionality that you can see without creating a profile, which is why you have to register to set anything up. If you have specific questions or concerns you’d like addressed before signing up please let me know as we’d love to have you reconsider creating an ORCID iD.

                                  • Drop all the so "my publications" nonsense and just provide a ID

Lots of other places already display publications, and the last thing that I want to have to do is maintain yet another list of buggy, half missing publications. So, I would suggest that you remove alll this stuff from the website and just concentrate of providing an ID. This would be useful and prevent the current confusion that ORCID is yet another social network for scientists of which there are already hundreds.

Thank you for submitting your idea to improve the ORCID Registry.

ORCID does not intend to be a researcher profile system—there are a number of systems in use in the research community that address specific requirements for particular groups. ORCID can be a data source for these systems, but we do not have the bandwidth to build such a system.

The overarching mission of ORCID is to provide a persistent and unique identifier to researchers. Persistence is managed with a great business plan. But, as David Lawrence notes, uniqueness requires that we have more information about an individual so that we can implement effective duplicate detection when someone registers or claims an iD. Email is one important data field, but so also are research works from which can be derived co-authors and affiliation information.

Because of this, we will continue to link ORCID with research works and will (with researcher…

There is no given name and family name of group. How group author can register to ORCID?

                                          Hi,

                                          Thanks for contacting ORCID Support!

Unfortunately, I can’t help with your request. ORCID is not a journal publisher, we’re a non-profit organization that aims to solve the name ambiguity problem in research and scholarly communications by creating a central registry of unique identifiers for individual researchers. Our system links with many journal publishers, which is how you may have been directed to our helpdesk. To publish your paper you’ll need to contact the journal directly, or submit your manuscript through the journal’s online system.

If you’d still like to register for an ORCID iD (or if you are being asked to provide for an ORCID iD as part of the manuscript submission process) instructions for how to sign up are at support.orcid.org/knowledgebase/articles/151590-register-for-an-orcid-id

                                          Best,

                                        • In the ABOUT, define what the ORCID ID is and give examples of how it is used.

In the ABOUT section, http://orcid.org/content/about-orcid, define what the ID is and show how it is used. After reading the whole ABOUT section, I had little idea what the ID looked like and how it was meant to be used.

Is the ID just the 16 digit number or does it include the http://orcid
