Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. provide the expansion of acronym ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) - use ABBR

Further to the closed ticket at [1], please use the HTML "abbr" element with title="Open Research Contributor ID", at least once on each page (perhaps in the banner). You can style this such that no visual change is made.

While the name ORCID was derived from an acronym, it has not been used as an acronym for quite some time. The name ORCID is a registered trademark referring to the organization that supplies ORCID iDs (the unique person identifiers) and provides the ORCID Registry (the database of ORCID iDs and related information in each ORCID Record.) We have found that adding reference to the no-longer-used acronym causes confusion between the organization ORCID and the identifier ORCID iD.

    • offer "vanity plate" option to choose an available number for a fee.

As with picking a personalized license plate number or phone number, once ORCIDs gain more currency, perhaps there would be revenue enhancement opportunities for those willing to pay a premium for the privilege of picking what theirs is from among what's available.

        Hi,

This is a really neat idea, thanks for the suggestion.

We do like your idea but we aren’t sure it fits with ORCID’s mission and we currently don’t have the development time to put into creating a system that let’s users pick iD numbers.

      • Attach affected email(s) when trying to register existing user via API

When trying to register a user with a primary or secondary email that already exists in the database, the API respons with HTTP 400 and a short error description. It would be helpful if the API also returned which email(s) that already are registered in the system, so this can be presented to the user, making it perhaps easier for him/her to retrieve the existing account.

          Hi,

I wanted to update you on the status on this idea. While this was something that we were planning to do, after reviewing the privacy concerns it is not a suggestion we can implement. Our privacy policy makes it clear we do not share an information a user has marked as private and returning an ORCID iD based on a private email address violates this policy.

For members looking at creating records we suggest you review our Create on Demand process at http://members.orcid.org/create-records which avoids the issue of creating duplicate records entirely.

        • Add a "Presentations" category under Conferences

Under the "Conferences" pull-down, it would be very helpful to have a "Presentations" choice. Many, many conference presentations are never published in a journal or proceedings.

The list of work types offered in ORCID is from the CASRAI Output Standards, which you can find out more about at http://dictionary.casrai.org/research-personnel-profile/contributions/outputs.
Rather than trying to maintain an inclusive list of work-types, ORCID has decided to use this vocabulary so we can focus on our main goal of providing unique identifiers. As the CASRAI vocabulary is updated, we will also update the work-type options in ORCID.

          • In the ABOUT, define what the ORCID ID is and give examples of how it is used.

In the ABOUT section, http://orcid.org/content/about-orcid, define what the ID is and show how it is used. After reading the whole ABOUT section, I had little idea what the ID looked like and how it was meant to be used.

Is the ID just the 16 digit number or does it include the http://orcid

                Hi,

Unfortunately ORCID is unable to offer support over phone at this time. We’re a start up company with a very small support department (just two people right now!) working with researchers around the world and it’s just not possible for us to offer assistance via phone at this time. But if you send us your issue at support@orcid.org or submit it though the question mark icon in the lower right on orcid.org pages we’ll be happy to help.

                Hi,
It would be great if you include full details of publication along with hyperlink.
Something like this; title, authors and publication details. If someone hover on it, should show hyperlink which can be connected to respective paper on web or etc
                Thank you

                  Hi,

The full publication information (and links to the paper) should be shown when you hover over the plus sign next to the title. We’ve hidden this information from the initial list as it creates a much easier to read list for authors who have numerous publications with long citations and lists of authors

                • Allow users to upload pdf file of their publications

Allowing users to upload the pdf file for each featured publication (files not to be made public, however) would help much. Indeed, this would make the ORCID user profile a repository allowing the user to download his/her own publications when he/she is out of his office (and for some reason, he/she needs a copy of his/her publications, e.g., during Conferences or Congresses, scientific meetings, etc.).

Thanks for the suggest, but this outside of the scope of ORCID’s current mission. Right now we’re just focused on ways for researchers to add information and link to complete documents; we don’t have the space or tools to effectively allow for pdf storage.

But you should look into Figshare http://figshare.com, an ORCID member, which provides free storage for research data as well as publications. And you can link your Figshare account to ORCID, just enter your ORCID iD when you sign up.

                      Hi,

Following a conversation with the folks at CDL, we’ve decided not to add EZIDs as an indentifier type. As EZIDs are either DOIs or ARKs
those fields can be used for adding these identifiers and having them correctly resolve to the object.

                      - -

This is a great suggestion. We’re looking into adding an option for EZID to an upcoming version of our schema. To help us put this in place, can you tell us how EZIDs should be resolved into a URL to provide a link to the dataset?

                      Thanks,

                        Hi,

I wanted to follow up and let you know that I was mistaken when I said this was a bug. The orcid.org site uses cookies to remember which language you selected for future visits, but on your initial visit to orcid.org the default language is English.

This decision was made on the advice of our translation contractor who told us the best practice is to present a website in it’s native language and allow users to select another language. If you know of any best practices that advise using browser settings instead, please let us know and we can review this decision.

Can you let me know where you are seeing COUNT_EIDS? We don’t use that term in the ORCID Registry and we also don’t provide ORCID iDs in Excel format. You may be confusing ORCID with Scopus as Scopus and other Elsevier products use EIDs as a unique identifier.

ORCID is not a journal publisher, we’re a non-profit organization that aims to solve the name ambiguity problem in research and scholarly communications by creating a central registry of unique identifiers for individual researchers. Our system links with many journal publishers. To publish your paper you’ll need to contact the journal directly, or submit it through the journal’s online system.

                              Thanks for the suggestion.

We’ve spent a while finding a display that balances providing information about publications, but not creating extraordinarily long records for authors with numerous publications which have large citations. Our current design of having the work title and date displayed in the main interface and moving all other citation details to a pop-up window is what we’ve found works best overall given the great diversity of publications listed in ORCID records.

We’ve designed the education, and the other sections of an ORCID record, to display a simple compact view for this very reason- so that basic information can be accessed without needed to scroll through details. However, it’s important that we also make all the detailed information about each item available which is why we moved it to the expanded section. This way all the details about an item on your ORCID record is available, but you can still see the basic information in a compact display.

                                Best,

The list of work types offered in ORCID is from the CASRAI Output Standards, which you can find out more about at http://dictionary.casrai.org/research-personnel-profile/contributions/outputs.

Rather than trying to maintain an inclusive list of work-types, ORCID has decided to use this vocabulary so we can focus on our main goal of providing unique identifiers. As the CASRAI vocabulary is update, we will also updated the work-type options in ORCID.

User interface may be re-styled to look more professional. Smaller text, more details. It is user friendly and efficient but looks too simple. In particular the generated ORCID public profile.
It could be connected with an European CV creation system (e.g. http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/en/documents/curriculum-vitae)

Thanks for the suggestion, however at this time ORCID doesn’t have the budget to invest in a full redesign of the Registry. We’re working on improving areas as we can (like the new display of works) but won’t be able to undertake a large re-styling in the near future. In addition, we have to make sure our design works in a number of different languages and mobile platforms which limits the amount of details we can include.

As it’s been a few months and I haven’t heard back I’m going to close this iDea. if you are still having issues please contact ORCID Support at support@orcid.org

                                      Hi,

Can you provide me with more information about how you think ORCID could improve our system search? We’d be interested in hearing your suggestions, but I’ll need more specific ideas before we can act on this.

                                      Thanks,

                                    • add all bibtex entry types among your 'work types'

Th 'work type' selector currently misses some categories that are important in academic research. For instance it misses the 'chapter in a book' or 'article in a collection' type of entries that are important when one contributes to a chapter in a book.

To solve these issues why not using at least all the standard entry identifiers used by bibtex plus those introduced by the IEEEtran.bst bibtex class? As a positive side effect, this would make the addition of works for which one already has a bibtex record straightforward.

                                        • Add md5 hash of email address(es) to public API response

Most users do not want to make their email address public. Providing a md5 hash of the address would be a workaround to allow profile matching based on email address without exposing the email address publicly.

This idea has been used for many years by the gravatar service.

                                            Thank you for your suggestion.

After carefully reviewing this idea, we’ve decided not to proceed with it.

It is considered a security risk if a “forget password” feature displays if an email address is active in a system. By allowing members to search email address hashes across ORCID, we would be imposing this same risk of data mining.

At this time we will not move forward with this feature due to the ORCID Trust implications.

                                            Warm regards,
