Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. ORCiD inbox links to actual works, not entire list

The Inbox currently shows which service has updated my Work section, and presents a link 'View on your record'. That link shows the entire list of works (for me, it basically goes to https://orcid.org/my-orcid). I often cannot find which work was added. It would be great if somehow that could be made transparent, ideally by opening up the relevant work(s) in a separate window/page.

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

At present, the current stable version of the ORCID API, v1.2, does not make it possible to clearly state which items have been added or updated to the ORCID record via the ORCID API. (This is what such notifications are indicating.)

The simplest method to determine what was added or updated at present is by checking the creation date (via more details view). The modification date can also be viewed via the ORCID public API.

The API version currently in development, v2.0, supports the addition and updating of individual works items. It is possible that this could result in more informative notifications.

We would appreciate hearing further suggestions on how the addition/update notifications can improve. What information do you expect to see in them?

    • Review of work categories and types

There have been several ideas related to the current work categories and types on the ORCID record and suggestions for addition and improvement. This thread will combine these ideas together, as well as serving as a place to discuss additional suggested categories or work types.

By way of background: The current listing of work types (see https://members.orcid.org/api/supported-work-types) is sourced from the CASRAI Output Standards. We would now like to open a discussion about the best approach to adding future work categories and types with the ORCID Community, through our iDeasForum.

Thank you for your suggestions to improve the ORCID…

For added security, you could consider implementing two-factor authentication.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

Offering two-factor authentication is a feature that we are considering for the coming year. Follow our process at: https://trello.com/c/Qep41Vg5/13

In the meantime, if you would to use two-factor authentication to sign in, we would suggest linking a support social or institutional account which offers two-factor authentication. You can read more about alternative sign in options at:

        • Mark up lists correctly

Please use list markup for lists of names, websites, other IDs, or keywords. This is not only semantically correct, per HTML specifications, but also improves accessibility for people using assistive software to access web pages.

Names would be best shown with each starting a new line (the present method can lead to confusion), but it is possible to style lists of keywords so that they are presented horizontally, with a visual separator such as a mid-dot. For websites and other DS, it is possible to style lists as at present, without bullets.

I'm happy to advise further if required.

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

This iDea is currently marked for consideration by our team. We’ll let you know as it further progresses. Many thanks!

          • Allow persistent sign-in states

Apparently users are being logged out after 20 mins of inactivity, when closing the browser or when integrated systems force it, see Twitter discussion at https://twitter.com/ORCID_Org/status/865153183219187713

This makes ORCID extremely frustrating to use for many users, as one is basically forced to re-login each and every time one uses the website.

There should be an option for "staying logged in", as most other websites (Facebook, Twitter, gmail etc.) offer, which will not log you out unless specifically requested.

            • Sort entries in the education, employment and funding sections by end date instead of start date

If there are two or more concurrent grants, for example, sorting by end date usually produces a more reasonable order.

              Consider the following situation:
              Grant 1: $500 000, 01/2014 - 12/2016
              Grant 2: $15 000, 12/2014-04/2015

Those are now displayed in the order Grant 2, Grant 1 and will be displayed this way even in mid-2016, when no one cares about Grant 2 anymore. The same is true for the tab education, where e.g. a short stay at a foreign university always pops to the top.

Sorting by end dates solves these issues, because the topmost entry is either the…

Thanks again for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We’re looking into this issue and would like to raise a question for your consideration. What do you think should be done in instances of open end dates? For example, an employment may be on an open-ended contract — should this be understood to be active and therefore floated to the top of the list?

                Many thanks for your interest.

                Warm regards,

Need way for end user to export users own complete record (xml/yaml/json okay).

This is for archival/backup/data verification/comparision and other purposes.

Bonus points for also allowing an edited complete record to be uploaded to replace the current one.

Note: This is probably possible from the API, but there should be a visible user driven methos to do this.

                  Hi,

Thanks for this suggestion. As you mentioned, a user can access their ORCID record via the ORCID API- instructions on how to do that are at http://support.orcid.org/knowledgebase/articles/132271-retrieving-data-with-the-public-api

We like your suggestion of offering a way to run this export in the user interface as well, but we will not be able to work on that right now. Our current priority is getting information into ORCID records and that’s where we’re focusing our development.

                  Best,
                  -Catalina

                • Users have finer control over access by Trusted Organizations

Currently access by Trusted Organizations is all or none. It would be great if users could specify the access type for each organization, e.g. with checkboxes or sliders. In addition, a panel to set defaults for new links to trusted orgs., e.g. always allow contact info to be seen, never allow activity to be edited, etc.

                  • Affiliation search - limit to current

API search for Affiliation gives result set that includes records where affiliation matches records having a matching affiliation in the past (but current affiliation(s) is not a match).

Enhancement request - ability to limit affiliation searches to records that match only most current affiliation(s) in researcher's ORCID record (i.e. exclude records where affiliation match was in the past / or is not current).

As suggested from support, one possible way would be to hook into where Affiliation has no ending date or is null on ending date.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry’s API search.

We’ll take this suggestion into consideration as we look into further improvements of our affiliations search feature and will update when we have further information.

                    • A 'report this' button is implemented to prevent spamming the registry

I searched the ORCID registry for "school" and lots of spam 'profiles' for driving schools, yoga schools, etc came up in the search results. For example:

                      http://orcid.org/0000-0001-7582-2402
                      http://orcid.org/0000-0001-9587-8075
                      http://orcid.org/0000-0001-6240-8560

ORCID has a process that runs each week aiming to identify potential suspect records, but it is dependent on keywords. I propose that ORCID implement a 'report this' button and we can crowdsource getting rid of these spam profiles?

                      • Allow users to define default preferred source for works, e.g. Scopus, then CrossRef, then...

Users may use multiple sources to find all research outputs, e.g. Scopus, CrossRef, etc.. The metadata from these may vary and some may be more suitable for export to other systems, e.g. Elsevier's PURE.

It would be useful to allow users to set a default preferred source (or priority order) for the online sources they have set up. At present, the user can only change the preferred source, case by case, for each output.

Thanks for your suggestion. We’ll put it under review to our team.

Please note that we generally do not recommend searching to find researchers’ ORCID iDs. Rather, we recommend asking them to provide their ORCID iD.

For systems, this would be by requesting that researchers sign into ORCID to provide their ORCID iD via authentication.

For individuals, this would be by asking the researcher directly for their ORCID iD.

                            Warm regards,

                            • Allow re-ordering of sections of ORCID record

At the moment my ORCID record is ordered with 'Education' at the top, followed by things like employment, funding and 'works'.

I would like to have my publications ('works') at the top of my profile instead of at the bottom, but there doesn't seem to be a way that I can change the order of the boxes.

I could set all the other boxes to 'private' so that only my publications show up, but I don't want to simply hide all the other information.

It would be excellent if you could allow users to move the 'blocks' of information in…

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the Registry.

This is an interesting suggestion that we will raise with our user interface design team for consideration.

                                Warm regards,

When I log in, I'm interested in my works, so I collapse the sections above that. I have to do this every time. Just remember my preferences for each section.

Thanks for a great suggestion. We’ll bring this up with our developers to see if it is something that can be easily implemented. Right now our focus is on adding additional functionality, but once that’s complete we’ll have more time to review the design of the ORCID record and will see if this is possible.

                                  Best,
                                  -Catalina

                                • Style visited links distinctively

If I perform a search, say:

                                  https://orcid.org/orcid-search/quick-search?searchQuery=Emma+Jones

then visit one of the links given in the results; then go back to the search page (or repeat the search), the link I visited still has the same styling as before.

ORCID's CSS is overriding the default styling for visited links, which would otherwise render differently to links that have not been visited.

                                  Please remove this override.

                                  • Making "affiliation" more general

We are considering adding "affiliation" as a general term to describe the relationship between an organization and an individual and would welcome your feedback on this suggestion.

In the longer term this could be the top level of a hierarchy to describe an individual's relationship with an organization (affiliation = education, employment, membership (?), other?).

This would allow us to group all places together in the same way as "works" is already used as a single category.

We need to use domain.dev for development on local environment. Otherwise we have to add 127.0.0.1 domain.com to hosts file for development. But .dev domains could not pass the url validator for redirect URIs

                                      • Default "email" privacy level to "limited"

I am working in entegrating an external service to ORCID, by letting local users authenticate via ORCID's OAuth.
Since we keep track of user email address, it would be extremely handy if by default email addresses were available in ORCID's profile, so that third party services like ours could match local users with existing profiles.

This is a great suggestion, but one that needs review before we can act on it. As ORCID is an international undertaking we have to comply with privacy regulations in numerous countries, some of which affect how we are able to share email address, even with trusted parties.

                                          Warm regards,

We're beginning a project asked for by our academics to allow them to have an on campus "research hub" that can then push details of their publications, funding, etc out to the myriad of different third party services they use, including ORCID. As part of the early stage development of this I've got some code running the successfully updates a user's biography in ORCID via the v1.2 API in the sandbox. Works well.

I've now read that API v1.2 will be retired later in 2017, so tried to move my code to API v2.0 in the sandbox. Unfortunately in v2.0…

Thanks for your suggestion to improve upcoming versions of the ORCID API.

Unlike most other parts of the ORCID record, the biography is a single field — it hasn’t a put code as it exists only in the singular. So to update it, your system would need to fully overwrite the biography, potentially removing what the user has already input.

The rationale behind not having the biography field be editable by any party other than the user is the same as why users cannot edit data that a client application has added: only the source of the data should be able to edit that data.

Could you provide some suggestions for consideration of how this could benefit users and workflows that could work for all parties?

                                            Thank you.

                                            Warm regards,
