Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

      Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

      Are you suggesting that every section of the ORCID record should have an associated anchor link which is displayed to the user?

      Many thanks.

      Warm regards,
      ORCID Community Team

    • add delimiter between multiple Acess Types

      Some trusted organizations add several access types and currently, these are listed with just a white space in between.

      "ScholarOne Manuscripts" is one example => "Read your biographical information Get your ORCID iD"

      In order to improve readability, please consider adding a delimiter like & there, or breaking such records into a small list:

      - Read your biographical information
      - Get your ORCID iD

        Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

        We’re going to add this to our list of improvements to consider for the future and will update here accordingly.

      • Sort should be able to be saved

        The sort feature is helpful but it cannot be saved. I would like to sort based on relevance (not necessarily date or alphabetically) but cannot save it for my profile. For example, I completed a PhD but later earned a masters in another field. I would like to list my PhD first since it is most relevant. If someone looked at my record they may erroneously think I only have a masters degree. Allowing me to save my sort for my profile would be very helpful.

          Thank you for your suggestion for improving the ORCID Registry.

          Our understanding is that you are requesting the ability to do one of the following:

          1. Allow the user to personally reorder items in, e.g., an affiliation list in order to have one’s preferred item display at the top

          2. Allow the user to save a certain sort view as the default view in their personal record (/my-orcid ) and public record (/0000-000x-xxxx-xxxx)

          Could you please clarify which you are proposing? Many thanks.

          Warm regards,
          ORCID Community Team

          • BibTeX Import Supports @String

            When importing BibTeX, your parser is not recognising @String definitions or is failing to expand them appropriately. The import just fails with no guidance to the user.

            Example:

            @String { MVA = {Machine Vision and Applications} }

            @Article{Khan.etal.2015,
            Title = {Better than {SIFT}?},
            Author = {Khan, Nabeel and McCane, Brendan and Mills, Steven},
            Journal = MVA,
            Year = {2015},
            Number = {6},
            Pages = {819--836},
            Volume = {26},
            DOI = {10.1007/s00138-015-0689-7}
            }

            Fails, but

            @Article{Khan.etal.2015,
            Title = {Better than {SIFT}?},
            Author = {Khan, Nabeel and McCane, Brendan and Mills, Steven},
            Journal = {Machine Vision and Applications},
            Year = {2015},

            • Exporting citations

              - It would be good to allow export of citations from the public view
              - It would be good that the exported bibtex would be consistent in naming the author. One basic interest of orcid is disambiguation of authors' names. The entries coming from different sources are not homogeneous in formating names (sometimes leading to erroneous spellings). At least the author from the concerned Orcid page whould be formatted correctly. At least, the first name/last name split should work!

                Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

                Regarding exporting citations from the public view:
                Presently one can create a print view only from a public ORCID record. Are you suggesting some other format?

                Regarding the exported BibTeX:

                Our BibTeX export tool exports the BibTeX already in your work’s metadata by default. If a third-party organization added a work to your ORCID record with a BibTeX citation that had different naming information, then the citation will include different information from our automatically-generated BibTeX.

                For more on exported BibTeX, see: https://support.orcid.org/knowledgebase/articles/1807552

                Warm regards,
                ORCID Community Team

              • Each work should show identifiers from all sources

                When a work has both Scopus and ResearchedID sources the UI shows either EID or WOSUID, depending on the primary source. But I as a user want to see all identifiers for each work. This would allow me to quickly find out which works were indexed by different citation indices.

                  Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

                  This is something similar to what occurs when reading an ORCID record using the ORCID API. When querying the /record, /activities or /works section, all identifiers for a work are displayed. You can read more about this at https://members.orcid.org/api/tutorial/reading-xml

                  As you note this is not the practice on the user interface at present. This is because a key principle of ORCID is that the party who adds information to an ORCID record is the party responsible for that information, and we do not add or edit that data. If all of the identifiers of a grouped work were to be displayed on the version of the preferred source of that work, then that would involve adding identifiers which a source had not asserted.

                  As the ORCID record owner, you can use the “Make a copy” feature to make a self-asserted…

                • Implement API for token revocation

                  At present, tokens can be issued using ORCID's OAuth API but they can't be revoked except by a user manually going to their Account settings on the main orcid.org website (https://orcid.org/account).

                  OAuth providers such as Google provide the ability for a token holder to revoke the token via an API. For example, see https://developers.google.com/identity/protocols/OAuth2WebServer#tokenrevoke

                  One current suggested flow of an application simply deleting the token from its database is unsafe, as the token is still valid (for up to 20 years) and is at risk of being found/brute-forced and abused. The other suggested flow of instructing the user…

                    Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry. This is a great idea, and it’s something that is possible to do using refresh tokens by revoking the original token. This will render the original token invalid and remove the active permissions in the user’s Trusted Organizations list.

                    You can find our page on refresh tokens and example calls at our member support centre:
                    https://members.orcid.org/api/oauth/refresh-tokens

                    For the time being, we’re also going to mark this as under review, as having a specific call for token revocation may be something that we would like to implement in the near future also.

                    Warm regards,

                  • work:url be included in the /record summary view

                    For a work that has only a URL associated with it (particularly if it is entered manually), there are a number of places to enter it. If the URL is included as an identifier <common:external-id-type>uri</common:external-id-type>, it will be included in the /record summary view. If it is not included as an identifier, it will be included in the /work view as <work:url>. I'd like to ask that <work:url> be included in the summary view (or for work:url to be copied to identifier type uri) so as to avoid making multiple calls to pull back all possible identifiers for a given…

                        Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

                        We have as flagged as a future improvement possibility adding more verbose error messages in response to BibTeX import issues. As we consider this feature, it would be helpful if you could suggest what information you would expect to see during the error report.

                        In addition, please note that generally we encourage you to import works using the machine-to-machine connections using our Search & Link wizards, such as Scopus, ResearcherID, EuropePubMed Central, and Crossref.

                        If you are experiencing problems with importing a specific BibTeX file, please get in touch with support@orcid.org and provide both the file as well as the system from which it was generated. There are some systems, such as EndNote, which require that you apply additional filters when generating the original BibTeX file, as those systems may include nonstandard or unsupported information in the BibTeX.

                        Thank you.

                      • Improve display of publication details

                        If you view an ORCID record and click on Show Details next to a publication, the upcoming detailed view looks in many cases very unattractive. You often (or always) see the record first in a bibtex view which is cryptic and hard to read. Why not showing an ordinary html view, e.g. a PubMed-like view as default?

                          Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

                          The ORCID record is intended to be a record of your research output, affiliations, funding history, etc. We store limited metadata information for each item based on the information that you have added to your ORCID record, or that you have granted an ORCID member organization such as Europe PubMed Central to add on your behalf.

                          The citation that is displayed in the ORCID is based on the citation provided with the work. We recommend that BibTeX citations be added to works. This enables you to have a verbose BibTeX citation when you export your works in BibTeX format, and it includes additional information than can be stored in the ORCID record, e.g. page numbers.

                          Keeping the above in mind, if you have specific suggestions on how information could be displayed on the ORCID record, please let us know.

                          Warm regards, …

                        • Improve grouping / deduplication of publications

                          When updating an ORCID record from various literature sources like Scopus, CrossRef, own entries, Pure, it happens easily that duplicates are not automatically being detected and hidden in the public view. Instead, you have to manually go through the list and hide duplicates. Only, if records contain the same doi the deduplication works.
                          Could this please be improved? Please try to establish a robust deduplication algorithm.

                            Hello,

                            Thanks for your iDea to improve the ORCID registry.

                            The way the ORCID interface works is that publications which have the same identifier (e.g. PMID, DOI) with the same “self” relationship are grouped together into one item. This way a publication isn’t listed multiple times if you added it from multiple sources, such as importing a publication from Scopus and ResearcherID. It looks like the problem on your record is that some of the items from ResearcherID were provided without an identifier.

                            If the identifiers are the same on two works which are not grouping, then the likely cause is due to the identifiers not sharing the same case (e.g. DOI: 10.0281/1234A.03 and DOI: 10.0281/1234a.03 ). Currently the ORCID Registry processes all identifiers as being case sensitive. This is a known issue — some identifiers are case sensitive, whilst others, such as DOIs, are not.

                            • display

                              A recent blog post highlighted new features including an easy way to display one's ORCID on their web page.

                              The user clicks a link and then copies some HTML code to embed in their page.

                              But is there a way to include semantic markup of the ORCID in that code?

                              I would guess that schema.org has some identifier namespace that could include the ORCID. No?

                              Wouldn't that enhance the findability and usability of the person and their ID with very little effort?

                              • Add rel="me" to "Display my iD" markup

                                The new "Display my iD" feature is great. The markup currently includes:

                                rel="noopener noreferrer"

                                Please change that to:

                                rel="noopener noreferrer me"

                                (the word order is not significant; "me noopener noreferrer" would work if you prefer) as done elsewhere on the site as a result of:

                                • registration procedure for people with visual impairments

                                  I recently needed to register with ORCHID and found it extremely problematic, because of the need to prove that I am not a robot. I, like many other people in the world, have visual impairments which make it extremely difficult for us to cope with visual demands on computer screens. The demand to prove that you are not a robot by indicating which of a number of boxes do not contain a requested item such as bridges, doors and so on presents great difficulty and is virtually impossible for me and others to do. I had to ask someone else…

                                    Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

                                    It is possible to complete the reCAPTCHA without using the image-based robot selection. At the bottom left of the reCAPTCHA screen are three options: the middle option is a headphones icon.

                                    To use the audio reCAPTCHA, click the headphones icon. A set of numbers will be read aloud. You will need to enter these numbers to pass the reCAPTCHA challenge.

                                    We would love to have suggestions to better improve the process! If you know of CAPTCHA-like systems which can be used to establish that the user is not a robot which are accessible to users with or without visual impairments, please do share them in this thread.

                                    Warm regards,

                                    • Add IPv6 support for the orcid.org domain

                                      Currently the website is only served and accessible over IPv4 and it would be great to have IPv6 supported for forward compatibility.

                                        It would be a good idea to divide authors' names in three parts instead of two: for instance, Dutch authors often have insertions in their names: given name, insertion(s), last name. Insertions can be for instance "van", "de" or "van de", causing authors, as it is now, to be found under the V or D of the insertions instead of under the first letter of their last name. A solution could be a third or middle box, in which insertions can be filled in. That could also be used by people who want to use their middle name: alphabetizing for…

                                          ORCID account should have a search facility for the works so that it could become easier for an account holder to navigate through the works and manage them.

                                            Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

                                            We require further information in order to consider this iDea. Do you wish to use the normal ORCID Search to search for works? If so, this is possible — here is a search using a DOI: https://orcid.org/orcid-search/quick-search/?searchQuery=10.23640%2F07243.4905773

                                            Could you confirm whether you want this to be more obvious? For example, an option to search by work identifier or work title on the Advanced Search page https://orcid.org/orcid-search/search

                                            Or do you mean that the user should be able to search through their own works that they have already added to their personal ORCID record? If so, what would you expect to be able to search, and how?

                                            Many thanks for input for you and from the community.

                                            Warm regards,
