ORCID iDeas Forum

Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. ORCID improves its customer support

    ORCID is very unresponsive to requests for customer support. For an international clientelle 24/ support needs to be available

    • DOI links in preview on public profile

      Dear ORCID Team,
      I am new to ORCID and just exploring it, and I've noticed, that the profile page is displayed differently when logged in and not.
      This totally does make sense, however, in the Works section, the public viewer have to go to the details of every item added to get the clickable URL, which seems unnecessary.
      Is there a chance to modify these items appearance so they would be URL's rightaway, as they appear in the profile when logged in?

      Thanks

      • use different colors to indicate work types.

        Different colors can be used to indicate work types. For example, green for a journal article, blue for a book, purple for a patent etc. That will make browsing much easier.

        • ORCID IDs would make excellent tags for AWS resource usage. Can this be facilitated by the system?

          AWS resources frequently (always?) allow tagging (an arbitrary tag name with a value). Is it possible as it stands to integrate with AWS services and APIs and push an ORCID ID as a tag?

          • Searching Orcid ids should be case-insensitive

            Searching an Orcid id, for example, 0000-0002-5781-158x, does not match the correct author but 0000-0002-5781-158X does.

            • Check for duplicated external identifiers (e.g. Scopus Author IDs)

              Over the past few months, I have reported several cases to ORCID's support team, where two records exist with the same Scopus Author ID, or the same Researcher ID.

              Usually these have proven to be duplicate records for the same individual, and one has been deprecated in favour of the other. In a small minority, one of the IDs has been entered in error, and has been removed.

              It would be good if ORCID would run a script against the database, which produces a report showing such cases, and perhaps fires off automated emails to the record holder(s) and. or…

                  Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

                  When you make an update on your ORCID record, the changes generally are displayed immediately (sometimes there may be a very slight delay). Could you please provide more details about what you expect to see in this feature?

                  Many thanks — we really appreciate your input!

                • There should be a section where you can list your CPD and professional training.

                  There may already be one, but I cannot see it.

                  Thanks,

                    Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

                    We agree completely! We are revamping our new affiliations section to be four subsections:

                    • Education and Qualifications
                    • Employment
                    • Invited positions and Distinctions
                    • Membership and Service

                    We’re in the final days of testing the feature before taking it live in the ORCID user interface and in the first release candidate of API 3.0. We’ll update this thread when it goes live.

                  • Add CORS headers to redirects from individual ORCID resources

                    After requesting an individual resource (e.g. https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3617-9378) as linked data, the server responds with the following:

                    $ curl -I -L -H "Accept: text/turtle" https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3617-9378
                    HTTP 1.1 302 Found
                    Location: https://pub.orcid.org/experimental_rdf_v1/0000-0002-3617-9378
                    ...

                    HTTP/1.1 200 OK
                    Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *
                    ...

                    While CORS headers are included on the the resource that is redirected to, they are not included in the redirect itself. This makes it impossible to make a cross-origin request for an ORCID resource via the canonical URL.

                    It would be great if the same Access-Control-Allow-Origin header could be added to the 302 response.

                    • Save all ORCID data into HTML to improve speed and search ranking

                      At the moment, most of the information shown in an ORCID profile is loaded via JavaScript rather than being saved directly into the HTML. This creates a number of problems:

                      - search engines cannot see any of that information (which is why even a blank Academia.edu page will tend to rank higher than a full ORCID record);
                      - an ORCID record shows up almost empty if one is browsing without JavaScript enabled, with no indication that one is missing anything;
                      - pages are slow to load and sometimes get stuck without loading completely;
                      - pages do not load on older…

                      • Break works and activities into tabs

                        On records with long lists of professional activities, it's difficult to sort through everything to see what is significant before getting to the works list, which is what most people want to highlight. I've seen a number of records where the person has purposely omitted eduction, employment, or funding for this reason.

                        Could you perhaps instead have separate tabs for works and activities (with the works being what one first sees on visiting an ORCID record)? This would leave us free to put as much information on there as desired without leaving the record too cluttered for a human to…

                        • Latex code of the author's name

                          Many co-authors and also publishers may not know how to write the author's name correctly. It would be really good, if I could put the latex code of my name to my profile. In that way, anyone can explicitly see the correct spelling of my name with accents and can also use it in the articles or the related databases.

                            Please note that we support UTF-8 and encourage systems to read such accordingly. Researchers can add all versions of their name encoded in UTF-8. If you find that another system is not reading your name from your ORCID record properly, please let us know and we can follow up to see if we can help troubleshoot this issue.

                            That being said, would you be able to provide some examples/ use cases for this functionality?

                            Kind regards,

                          • Search API - Need for additional fields in result list

                            With API 2.0 all requests to /search are answered with just a list of identifiers.
                            This is not sufficient for many use cases and forces clients to perform additional HTTP requests in order to present search results to human users.
                            In my opinion the existing /search endpoint should be extended to display all available index fields if needed.
                            This could easily be done without breaking existing contracts, e.g. by introducing another optional request parameter that allows clients to specify what fields should come with the response or by introducing an additional content type that allows clients to ask for full…

                                Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

                                It looks like your suggestion was cut short. Could you please expand it in the comments? We can help to update your original post to reflect.

                                Our understanding is that you are suggesting that an additional metadata item be added to works in the ORCID record. This item would indicate whether the work item is open access.

                                Are you proposing something along the lines of true/false (which in the UI for manual entry might be a tickbox) ?

                                Many thanks!

                                Warm regards,

                                Would it be possible to add a field for a "list of supervised students/PhDs" to his ORCID profile.

                                • Add Kosovo to the country list

                                  Dear Madam/Sir,

                                  Upon registering the location of where I have completed my bachelor studies, I witnessed that Kosovo was not on the list of countries.

                                  I would greatly appreciate if Kosovo was listed in the list of countries in ORCID considering that the Independence of Kosovo is recognized internationally.

                                      Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

                                      We will look into the feasibility of adding anchor links or something similar to each section of the ORCID record as a possible item for future development.

                                      Warm regards,

                                    • add delimiter between multiple Access Types in Account Settings

                                      Some trusted organizations add several access types and currently, these are listed with just a white space in between.

                                      "ScholarOne Manuscripts" is one example => "Read your biographical information Get your ORCID iD"

                                      In order to improve readability, please consider adding a delimiter like & there, or breaking such records into a small list:

                                      - Read your biographical information
                                      - Get your ORCID iD

                                        We’re going to add this to our list of improvements to consider for the future and will update here accordingly.

                                      • Sort should be able to be saved

                                        The sort feature is helpful but it cannot be saved. I would like to sort based on relevance (not necessarily date or alphabetically) but cannot save it for my profile. For example, I completed a PhD but later earned a masters in another field. I would like to list my PhD first since it is most relevant. If someone looked at my record they may erroneously think I only have a masters degree. Allowing me to save my sort for my profile would be very helpful.

                                          Thank you for your suggestion for improving the ORCID Registry.

                                          Our understanding is that you are requesting the ability to do one of the following:

                                          1. Allow the user to personally reorder items in, e.g., an affiliation list in order to have one’s preferred item display at the top

                                          2. Allow the user to save a certain sort view as the default view in their personal record (/my-orcid ) and public record (/0000-000x-xxxx-xxxx)

                                          Could you please clarify which you are proposing? Many thanks.

                                          Warm regards,

                                        • BibTeX Import Supports @String

                                          When importing BibTeX, your parser is not recognising @String definitions or is failing to expand them appropriately. The import just fails with no guidance to the user.

                                          Example:

                                          @String { MVA = {Machine Vision and Applications} }

                                          @Article{Khan.etal.2015,
                                          Title = {Better than {SIFT}?},
                                          Author = {Khan, Nabeel and McCane, Brendan and Mills, Steven},
                                          Journal = MVA,
                                          Year = {2015},
                                          Number = {6},
                                          Pages = {819--836},
                                          Volume = {26},
                                          DOI = {10.1007/s00138-015-0689-7}
                                          }

                                          Fails, but

                                          @Article{Khan.etal.2015,
                                          Title = {Better than {SIFT}?},
