ORCID iDeas Forum

Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Could you please provide an additional field for checksums?

When electronic texts are referenced, they often have urn, doi or other persistent identifiers in repositories or e-journals. Not always do those repositories or journals create publicly available checksums. So could you provide an additional field for entering checksums for files? And options to choose for type of checksum. md5, SHA2-256, SHA3-256 and so on. Thank you very much

Allow the nature of a contribution to be described, ie: allow an author to distinguish between papers on which s/he was an author, and papers where his/her involvement was more investigatory.

Just to give an update on this: Reviewing the contributor roles in the ORCID Registry, and how or where researchers or organisations assert those roles, is a part of our goals in 2017. Watch this space for more information in the coming year.

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry. We have been collaborating with Mozilla Science Lab, BioMed Central (BMC), Public Library of Science (PLoS), the Wellcome Trust, and Digital Science, among others, to develop a prototype for assigning badges to individuals based on the contributor role vocabulary developed by Project CRediT in 2015. ORCID will be incorporating these contributor roles into our Registry. For each contribution (such as an article, dataset, or presentation) connected to and displayed on an ORCID record, the record holder will be able to select their role(s) they played from the Project CRediT list.

        Contributorship Open Badges is…

          Hi,

Thanks for your suggestion. I’m interested to hear more about how we could best capture the work done by PhD advisers. Do you see it best captured as having the thesis listed on your record with a role set to “Adviser”? Or would you suggest a new category of “service” items that might include serving as an adviser? Or do you have another suggestion? We’d like to get your input in the comments to think about the best way we might complete your suggestion.

          Thanks,
          -Catalina

        • Allow users to add other identifers to their profiles

[Further to my recent off-line conversation with Laure Haak]

ORCID has integration with ISNI and ReseracherID, which is great, but should also allow users to enter other identifiers, such as VIAF and Wikidata IDS in their profile.

[Including Wikidata effectively gives a link to any Wikipedia biographies of the person.]

These could be entered as strings (and perhaps validated using check digits) and made links to the relevant external sites.

The values should be available via API.

If, later the systems that provide the identifiers have full, two-way integration, the data will thus be already available.

          Happy to advise further.

            Hi Andy,

This is an excellent suggestion and one we’ve talked about a few times at ORCID. I’ve marked it as under review as we’ll need to figure out the best way to include these other identifiers, before we can start work on it. But hopefully this is something we’ll be able to fit into our development priorities this year.

            Best,
            -Catalina

Thanks for the suggestion. We’re working on adding functionality that encourages common values in various free text entry fields in ORCID, such as keywords. Our working plan is to “seed” the list of possibilities with values that we may expect to be there. As a user types an answer, suggestions from this list are provided. When a user enters a value that isn’t part of the original list, it will become a part of the list when a certain number of people have entered the same value. These added entries then behave the same way as the seeded list does.

This way, there is an organically growing list of expected fields, and the user is more likely to choose from this list because the interface will autocomplete for the user, but the user is not confined to existing values.

We’re hoping to have this function available in six months…
