(see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

      Our understanding is that you are suggesting that an additional metadata item be added to works in the ORCID record. This item would indicate whether the work item is open access.

      Are you proposing something along the lines of true/false (which in the UI for manual entry might be a tickbox) ?

    • Improve display of publication details

      If you view an ORCID record and click on Show Details next to a publication, the upcoming detailed view looks in many cases very unattractive. You often (or always) see the record first in a bibtex view which is cryptic and hard to read. Why not showing an ordinary html view, e.g. a PubMed-like view as default?

        The ORCID record is intended to be a record of your research output, affiliations, funding history, etc. We store limited metadata information for each item based on the information that you have added to your ORCID record, or that you have granted an ORCID member organization such as Europe PubMed Central to add on your behalf.

        The citation that is displayed in the ORCID is based on the citation provided with the work. We recommend that BibTeX citations be added to works. This enables you to have a verbose BibTeX citation when you export your works in BibTeX format, and it includes additional information than can be stored in the ORCID record, e.g. page numbers.

        Keeping the above in mind, if you have specific suggestions on how information could be displayed on the ORCID record, please let us know.

          We have as flagged as a future improvement possibility adding more verbose error messages in response to BibTeX import issues. As we consider this feature, it would be helpful if you could suggest what information you would expect to see during the error report.

          In addition, please note that generally we encourage you to import works using the machine-to-machine connections using our Search & Link wizards, such as Scopus, ResearcherID, EuropePubMed Central, and Crossref.

          If you are experiencing problems with importing a specific BibTeX file, please get in touch with support@orcid.org and provide both the file as well as the system from which it was generated. There are some systems, such as EndNote, which require that you apply additional filters when generating the original BibTeX file, as those systems may include nonstandard or unsupported information in the BibTeX.

        • Review of work categories and types

          There have been several ideas related to the current work categories and types on the ORCID record and suggestions for addition and improvement. This thread will combine these ideas together, as well as serving as a place to discuss additional suggested categories or work types.

          By way of background: The current listing of work types (see https://members.orcid.org/api/supported-work-types) is sourced from the CASRAI Output Standards. We would now like to open a discussion about the best approach to adding future work categories and types with the ORCID Community, through our iDeasForum.

          • Place more controls on DOI entry and group more DOI variants together

            Place controls on how DOIs are entered in the manual entry form so that only the DOI (not the link form of the DOI can be entered). Right now people can enter a DOI in the forms "http://dx.doi.org/DOI" or "http://doi.org/DOI" and these will end up in their record and will not be grouped properly with duplicate records from other sources. Another fix would be to treat "http://dx.doi.org/DOI", "https://dx.doi.org/DOI", "https://doi.org/DOI", and "http://doi.org/DOI" as duplicates of DOI for the purposes of grouping.

              Thanks for your suggestion for improving the Registry.

              Our policy is to not change data that the user or member has added to the Registry. Once thing we can do is set the automatic URL that will be displayed when members or users only add the identifier and not the identifier URL. Earlier this year we updated this so the default is https://doi.org/[DOI] rather than https://dx.doi.org/[DOI]. See: https://trello.com/c/OfYenJ21/3137

              We’re also preparing a review for identifier validation and case sensitivity. (See also: https://support.orcid.org/forums/175591/suggestions/16897273 ) We’ll take this into consideration as we approach this with respect to DOIs and other identifiers.

            • Allow users to define default preferred source for works, e.g. Scopus, then CrossRef, then...

              Users may use multiple sources to find all research outputs, e.g. Scopus, CrossRef, etc.. The metadata from these may vary and some may be more suitable for export to other systems, e.g. Elsevier's PURE.

              It would be useful to allow users to set a default preferred source (or priority order) for the online sources they have set up. At present, the user can only change the preferred source, case by case, for each output.

              • Develop tagging and filtering to support funding application requirements

                It seems relatively common that online grant/fellowship application systems ask the applicant to enter a list of works that is more specific than the complete list available on an ORCID profile. For example, some just want just journal articles, or just pubmed-indexed articles, or they want a separate list of works that arose from their previous funding, etc.

                If users could tag their works and then provide a link to a list of works filtered by specific tags, then I think there would be a real possibility of funders changing their application requirements to allow such links in place of…

                • Add a preprint field to direct to openly available versions of a work

                  Please consider adding a new field for a preprint identifier or link that could be added to existing works. This would allow someone visiting a profile to find an openly accessible version of a work (e.g., journal or conference paper).

                  In many fields, "green open access" is more practical than "gold open access" due to a lack of recognized OA journals. Thus, many authors wanting to make a paper available will submit it to a preprint server (such as arXiv, figshare, or Zenodo) in addition to publishing in a traditional (closed) journal.

                    We’re going to add this to our list of improvements to consider for the future and will update here accordingly.

                    That said, do note that it is currently possible to import a work that is available from Figshare and Zenodo to the ORCID record via Datacite (see e.g. this document shared by ImpactStory http://goo.gl/Fjn8x ). : )

                  • Allow date ranges for (some) works

                    Some "works" don't have a single publication date, but operate over a period of time. For example, a website which I managed and edited from 2001-2014. Please allow date ranges. including an "-onging" option.

                        Bluebook is not offered as an option for citation format but it is common among legal scholars.

                          We have added Bluebook citation formats to our list of improvements to consider in the future for the ORCID Registry.

                          At present, you can use “unspecified” for bluebook citations.

                          The list of work types offered in ORCID is from the CASRAI Output Standards, which you can find out more about at http://dictionary.casrai.org/research-personnel-profile/contributions/outputs.
                          Rather than trying to maintain an inclusive list of work-types, ORCID has decided to use this vocabulary so we can focus on our main goal of providing unique identifiers. As the CASRAI vocabulary is updated, we will also update the work-type options in ORCID.

                            We’ve combined a couple suggestions about researcher roles into this idea where we can keep you updated with progress. ORCID is planning to review the role options that we capture and how those roles are displayed shortly. We will be including all the ideas proposed in the forum in that review and will provide an update once that review is done. If you have any more suggestions for roles please leave them as a comment on this idea.
