ORCID iDeas Forum

Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Group DOIs with case insensitive comparison to resolve works duplication

I think that when comparing the DOIs of works to decide what to group, you aren't parsing them to be case insensitive using ASCII case folding for comparison of text.
    https://www.doi.org/doi_handbook/2_Numbering.html#2.4
The doi:10.1002/14651858.CD001730.pub3 is equivalent to doi:10.1002/14651858.cd001730.pub3
but Scopus and CrossRef are using these two different presentations, which then list as separate works in ORCID.
Although in this this case I can create a manual entry with the Scopus ID and the DOI as listed by CrossRef, I shouldn't have to and the Scopus presentation of the DOI is the one preferred by the publisher.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

Currently the ORCID Registry processes all identifiers as being case sensitive. This is a known issue — some identifiers are case sensitive, whilst others are not.

Our team recognize this issue and will be addressing it by cataloguing our identifiers, their case sensitivity, and other validity issues, then putting these into effect and potentially sharing some of the data in the identifiers API (https://pub.orcid.org/v2.0/identifiers/ ).

We currently have looking into the identifiers scheduled to commence April 2017 and shall update you when we are further into the project.

      Warm regards,
      ORCID Community Team

    • Resume or CV

ORCID is great as it is an online CV/resume. But it would be great if this record gets printed out automatically as a CV/resume with different formats available. Or an additional app which does this would also be great with editing features available.

Just to give an update on this project:

We have a demo of the ORCID badge widget that you can test by going to https://orcid.org/my-orcid?widget and clicking on the link to “Share your ORCID iD on other sites.”

Some of the feedback that we’ve received thus far is that it is quite large, and that it does not coincide with current iD display guidelines.

We expect to return to this project after we have finished deployment of the 2.0 API and have released the updated display guidelines in 2017.

If you have any feedback on this feature please let us know either here or at support@orcid.org

          Warm regards,
          ORCID Community Team

        • Improve Search Options

Please try to improve Search options in 2 ways:
1.- Aspect: show Search box in another locatiom, shape and colours. It's not obvious that this grey line is the Search box.
2.- More fields in Advanced Search: add affiliation and fields combined with Boolean operators
          Thanks.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry. Since you’ve first submitted this suggestion, we’ve improved the appearance of the search bar, and are now working on the affiliations search. You can follow progress on the Current Development Trello at:
            https://trello.com/c/7OywbDz8/3102

In the meantime, we would suggest that those looking into advanced search options also consider using the ORCID Public API. A tutorial is available at:

          • use ISO 8601 on the home page

            http://orcid.org/ it says

            12/08/2014

could be 12 August or December 8

use non-ambiguous ISO 8601 format instead. Also avoids bias towards US or European format.

To update on this iDea: We’ve started development to use ISO 8601 on the orcid.org pages (https://trello.com/c/rRK3Nx5N/3587 ). Let us know if you find other pages on orcid.org which are not using ISO 8601.

We’re reopening this request as we’ve been notified that there are some dates which are not ISO 8601 complaint. We are looking to address this issue.

              We’ve thus far found two:
              https://orcid.org (news list, right column)
              https://orcid.org/statistics

If you see any others on orcid.org or members.orcid.org, please let us know.

(n.b. support.orcid.org is hosted on a third-party service, so we need to investigate whether they can enable ISO-8601 on the forum section of the site.)

              Warm regards,
              ORCID Community Team

            • Provide authentication with OpenID Connect

Since plain oauth for accessing the API is primarily for authorization, it would be great to be able to use ORCID as an authentication provider with an open standard as OpenID Connect. Users could then easily log into other research platforms using their ORCID account.

              • change an element of the form relating to manual additions

If you want to add a book chapter, you want the title of the collection to appear immediately below your chapter title. This can be done by adding the title of the book to the 'Journal title' section of the manual addition page. Might you change this label to 'Journal or book title'?

Thanks again for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We have implemented the first phase of this improvement. Now when you choose a work type related to a non-journal publication, the field display title for “Journal title” will dynamically update to a relevant title, e.g. “Conference title”, “Book title”, and “Publisher”.

There has been an additional call for the form to dynamically update based on the work category selected, e.g. choosing the category “Conference” would change the field display name of “Journal title” to “Conference title”. At present, one must first choose the category “Conference” and then one of the conference work types in order for the title to dynamically update.

We’ll share more news as this feature is further developed. Thanks again for your suggestion and support.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry. We have some progress to report on this.

We now have https as the default for the API and ORCID websites, and are working to include only https links across all sites and automated emails.

We’ve also suggested that the https version of ORCID iDs be the encouraged display format in our iD display guidelines — see more at https://orcid.org/blog/2017/02/16/draft-display-guidelines-ids-articles-open-comment

                  • More information about why a researcher should sign up for an ORCID

ORCID is a great system - and, as a publisher, I love it when researchers use it - but there is little/no material on the website (eg in 'for researchers' section, or in FAQ) as to why authors would be motivated to sign up... we have had comments like 'oh, it's just another academia.edu' and 'oh, it's just another research gate' when we have tried to explain... there needs to be some information we can hand to them about why this would help them further their career, or get credit for their work, or make connections, or (most importantly) help…

Thanks for your suggestion for improving the ORCID Registry and related websites.

We’ve some further information on communicating ORCID to researches (see: http://www.slideshare.net/ORCIDSlides/overview-of-orcid-for-researchers and http://www.slideshare.net/ORCIDSlides/spreading-the-orcid-word-orcid-communications-webinar-june-2016), but improving resources on our main site is also on our to do list.

It’s also one of the topics for our upcoming videos in our How To? ORCID video series, see:
                      https://orcid.uservoice.com/admin/forums/390876/suggestions/15531693

We’ll update this thread accordingly as we make further updates to ORCID for researches.

Just to give an update on this: Reviewing the contributor roles in the ORCID Registry, and how or where researchers or organisations assert those roles, is a part of our goals in 2017. Watch this space for more information in the coming year.

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry. We have been collaborating with Mozilla Science Lab, BioMed Central (BMC), Public Library of Science (PLoS), the Wellcome Trust, and Digital Science, among others, to develop a prototype for assigning badges to individuals based on the contributor role vocabulary developed by Project CRediT in 2015. ORCID will be incorporating these contributor roles into our Registry. For each contribution (such as an article, dataset, or presentation) connected to and displayed on an ORCID record, the record holder will be able to select their role(s) they played from the Project CRediT list.

                        Contributorship Open Badges is…

                      • Oauth2 scope to allow ORCID/end-user to grant field level access to an API

Currently ORCID end-users must grant an API either all/none access to their data based on pre-existing security/privacy settings. Please allow the Oauth2 "scope" parameter to "request" access to specific data elements which the ORCID/end-user could then say yes/no to on a per-request (authorization) basis.

This is successfully done in the Facebook Oauth2 implementation:

                        https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/dialogs/oauth/

scope: A comma separated list of permission names which you would like people to grant your app. Only the permissions people have not already granted your app will be shown

Just to give an update on this:
We are still working on the process to request piecemeal access to scopes.

In the meantime, to address a question raised in comments about email access:

The majority of email addresses on ORCID records are set to private, meaning that even obtaining /read-limited access would not allow the client to read email addresses on an ORCID record.

We are currently working on a process to allow clients to request read access to email addresses, even if they are set to private on the ORCID record. The researcher will be able to uncheck this box to deny the client permission to read their email address, whilst allowing other permissions.

You can follow our developmental progress on this at our Current Development Trello:
                          https://trello.com/c/W9rPpV4v/2501

                        • Website navigation suggestions

Some thoughts from using the website today.

                          1. The search bar is fairly wide but has very little height and also has very little space above or below it. I found myself accidentally clicking on links in my bookmarks bar above the search box on more than one occasion when trying to search.

                          2. The magnifying glass 'search' element did not intuitively look like a magnifying glass to me…because of the 'iD' text inside it. I initially thought this might be a shortcut to my ORCID profile page. Maybe just having text that says 'Search' or 'Go' would be less…

You can test it yourself, accessing the sub-menus is hard

                            • Correct apostrophied author names in Scopus import

My surname contains an apostrophe. After importing from SCOPUS, all of my papers have my surname as O\'Boyle.

We are still working on this issue. We’ve corrected it with Scopus so no more errors like this will be imported in the Registry and are now working on clean up existing records with this problem.

Sorry for our delay in responding to this bug. We are working to correct this error, but the developer we’ve worked with at Scopus has been on long term leave so we haven’t been able to resolve the issue as quickly as we had hoped. I will update you when this bug is fixed and I appreciate you bringing it to our attention.

                                Best,
                                -Catalina
