      You have left! (?) (thinking…)

We have an update to this.

Those who follow our Trello board may have seen that an option to export works on the ORCID record to BibTeX is now in our hidden features awaiting final testing, documentation, and launch.

This means that we are in the final stages of testing before it goes live — and we’d love your feedback! The feature is available as a hidden flag on your personal ORCID record. Once you have signed into your account, go to:
      https://orcid.org/my-orcid?bibtexExport

From there, choose “Export” from the works bar, and you will be able to save your works as a BibTeX file.

Some early issues that have been identified:

      • Works in non-Latin scripts (Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Thai, etc.) do not export properly (only ???s)
      • Not all unique identifiers are included with the exported BibTeX
      • Little information given about the export feature
      • No link to documentation about exporting BibTeX

      ORCID (APAC/MEA)AdminORCID (APAC/MEA) (Admin, ORCID) commented  ·

      Hello anonymous,

We're sorry to hear that the BibTeX was unable to be successfully imported. Contact support@orcid.org with your BibTeX file and more information about the manager. Note as well our guide on BibTeX: https://support.orcid.org/knowledgebase/articles/390530#4issues

      Hello Gail,

We just did a test export of your works in BibTeX and found DOIs exported successfully in many items. Please contact support@orcid.org with the BibTeX file you received and the works which did not have exported DOIs, and we will look into what happened.

Note: Our BibTeX export tool exports the BibTeX already in your work's metadata by default. If a third-party organization added a work to your ORCID record with a DOI and a BibTeX citation, but did not include the DOI in that BibTeX citation, then the citation will not include a DOI.

      Warm regards,
      ORCID Community Team

Thanks for your comment Ginny! The BibTeX export feature is now available as a hidden flag for testing purposes. We've just updated the main response with information on how you can help with testing it. Let us know what you think!

Thanks for your comment. Are you aware of organisations currently adding data to users' ORCID records which also store and would transmit checksums as a part of the metadata?

        Many thanks,

Thanks again for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We’re looking into this issue and would like to raise a question for your consideration. What do you think should be done in instances of open end dates? For example, an employment may be on an open-ended contract — should this be understood to be active and therefore floated to the top of the list?

          Many thanks for your interest.

          Warm regards,
          ORCID Community Team

We have received this comment separately in response to this question:

after thinking about this issue, I would say yes: float entries without end date to the top. If several entries have no end date, they can still be sorted by their start date -- same for entries with identical end date, as suggested in the original post.

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

At present, the current stable version of the ORCID API, v1.2, does not make it possible to clearly state which items have been added or updated to the ORCID record via the ORCID API. (This is what such notifications are indicating.)

The simplest method to determine what was added or updated at present is by checking the creation date (via more details view). The modification date can also be viewed via the ORCID public API.

The API version currently in development, v2.0, supports the addition and updating of individual works items. It is possible that this could result in more informative notifications.

We would appreciate hearing further suggestions on how the addition/update notifications can improve. What information do you expect to see in them?

Thanks for your comment, Daniel Himmelstein. Do you mean the identifier of the new item that has been added to the ORCID record?

Please note that ORCID does not create new ORCID records (ORCID iDs) -- only you can do that. https://orcid.org/blog/2015/12/04/importance-opt

              Hi Andy,

Great suggestion. We’re aware of the paper and are currently reviewing it. We’re concerned with how we can roll out the changes suggested without affecting API users. We do want to improve the ORCID API but we want to make sure any changes we implement will not break current integrations.

              Hi Andy,

Thanks for the reminder. We're going to flag this so our team can get an update this quarter, but we probably will not be able to get a response until after the release of the 2.0 API this month.

The 2.0 API is a major update which will significantly change how integrators interact with the ORCID Registry. However subsequent versions are expected to come at a much faster rate as the changes will be more incremental.

              best,
              ORCID Community Team

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We'd like to get your thoughts on how this could be implemented. The weightiness of one type over another may differ between user. How might the relative importance of work types be measured? Would users be able to go through the list of all work types and set their preferred display?

Just to give an update on this project:

We have a demo of the ORCID badge widget that you can test by going to https://orcid.org/my-orcid?widget and clicking on the link to “Share your ORCID iD on other sites.”

Some of the feedback that we’ve received thus far is that it is quite large, and that it does not coincide with current iD display guidelines.

We expect to return to this project after we have finished deployment of the 2.0 API and have released the updated display guidelines in 2017.

If you have any feedback on this feature please let us know either here or at support@orcid.org

                  Warm regards,

Thanks for your query, and thanks for raising it. No, the badge widget is not yet deployed.

We expect that it will be on the back burner until the new display guidelines are released in the next year so that we can bring its display in line with the trademark & iD display guidelines (https://orcid.org/trademark-and-id-display-guidelines) -- iD icon followed the http(s) URI, both hyperlinked to the record.

It's also expected to be smaller, in pace with feedback here and from current testers.

                    Thank you for your suggestion.

Presently search via the ORCID website and public API is available for only the biographical sections of the ORCID record.

Could you give us more information about what areas of funding you would expect to be searched?

That said, ORCID is not a social networking service, and we do not ask that researchers keep their ORCID records fully populated with publicly-facing distinguishing data — though it is great if a researcher wishes to do that and we support them doing so. We help researchers connect their ORCID iDs by signing into their ORCID account after being linked from another system. Then data is exchanged via the ORCID API, giving the system the researcher’s ORCID iD. These validated connections allow machine-to-machine exchanges of data, reducing data entry errors and mistaken identification.

                    Warm regards,
                    ORCID Community Engagement and Support

There are a couple of searches I would like to be able to perform:

                    1) A search by affiliation
This would likely require institution names to be standardized in your
database, i.e. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and WHOI refer to
the same place (similar to Web of Science Organization-Enhanced). The
results would need to be filtered, i.e. current affiliation vs past
                    affiliation.

                    2) I would like to be able to enter a boolean search that consists of the author's last name and the institution s/he has been affiliated with; with filtering as above.

                    3) Search results (regardless of query) should sort by:
                    last_name > first_name (a to z, and z to a)

                    4) Search results should be exportable to a variety of formats, i.e. excel

I was thinking it would be nice to search for people currently in my university/ possible collaborators. Not for social purposes, but to identify how many people here have orcids and who we could reach out to.

Thanks for your comment Joel. For middle names, our recommended practices is that you list your given and family name as your first and last name, and then include your middle name in the published name field. The published name field will be the field that always displays on the top left of your ORCID record.

In the meantime, you may be interested in the ORCID Widget, which is currently a hidden feature. When you're signed in, go to https://orcid.org/my-orcid?widget and click "Share your ORCID iD on other sites" to access the widget.

Thank you for your suggestion on improving the ORCID Registry.

Could you give further information as to what you would expect from the works data search? We would suggest that you review the v2.0 release candidates, as such search features would be likely implemented on the version currently in development.

At present the ORCID API cannot be used to search works data. However an API client can obtain permission to read limited-access data on the ORCID record, including works data. An application can request such access from researchers at their institution, obtain their works data, and then search that data for works from a certain year.

                          Warm regards,

What are your thoughts for slightly amending this to be adding works using BibTeX?

This could include sources of BibTeX in addition to Google Scholar. It could also mention common BibTeX issues, such as BibTeX exported from EndNote not being immediately able to be imported and requiring the use of a filter. (KAUST has kindly made a modified BibTeX filter for EndNote available: http://libguides.kaust.edu.sa/orcid )

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID registry.

We have submitted this iDea — improving fuzzier searches — for consideration in our next round of projects and will update you when we have further information on it going forward.

                                Warm regards,

                                Thanks for your idea.

To clarify, your suggestion is to offer fuzzier searches so that either "Mabett", "Mabbet", or "Mabet" may return "Mabbett" as a possible result -- is that correct?

Could you please provide more details about this situation? Was the incorrect data imported from UberWizard?

If so, then you would need to contact UberResearch directly (uberwizard@uberresearch.com) to correct the data. UberResearch and ORCID are two separate systems. While we have a tool to import your funding data from UberResearch, we do not control the data on their system.

                                  Warm regards,

This is suggestion is currently under review. When we launched the Education and Employment Sections we decided not to add professional associations at that time but to leave the option open for possible future development. I’ll update the status again once we make a final decision.

                                    Best,

                                    Hello,

                                    Thank you for your suggestion.

Could you give some examples of types of affiliations to assist our review?

                                    Thank you.

This is an interesting idea and one we’d like to know more about. Can you tell us more about the types of certificates you’d like to be able to associate with your ORCID record and why this would be valuable? We need more information before we can determine how to respond to this suggestion. Thanks!
