Introduction

General information about works in your ORCID record can be found at Add Works.

ORCID has created a tool that allows you to import citations from BibTeX (.bib) files into your ORCID record, including files exported from Google Scholar and other popular citation management tools.

Creating BibTeX Files

BibTeX is a platform-independent, plain-text format used for bibliographic citations. BibTeX files can be created using many reference management tools.

Due to its popularity and widespread availability, we've included instructions for exporting BibTeX files from Google Scholar. For instructions for exporting BibTeX from other citation management tools, please check the support sites for those tools.

Exporting BibTeX Files from Google Scholar

If you have a Google Scholar Citations profile, you can export a list of publications from your profile to a BibTeX file. Note: ORCID does not maintain or provide support for Google Scholar. If you have questions about creating, accessing or managing your Google Scholar profile, see Google Scholar Citations help documents or contact Google Scholar

  1. Visit http://scholar.google.com and click My Citations at the top of the page. Sign in to your account, if prompted.

  2. On your My Citations page, select articles to export by clicking the checkbox beside each article. To select all articles in your My Citations list, click the checkbox at the top of the list.

  3. Once you have selected the articles you'd like to export, click the Export button, then choose BibTeX.

  4. In the dialog box that appears, click the Save button to save the file to your computer. (Note: Depending on your operating system, your screen may look different from the image below)

Importing BibTeX Files into ORCID

To import a list of publications saved in a BibTeX (.bib) file into your ORCID record:

  1. Log into your ORCID record at http://orcid.org/signin

  2. In Works section of your record go to Add works then Import BibTeX.

  3. In the view that opens, click Choose File

  4. When your computer's file browser opens, select a BibTeX (.bib) file from your computer and click open. (Note: Depending on your operating system, your screen may look different from the image below)

  5. The publications from the file will appear in a list with Save/Delete icons beside them:
Important! Your import is not complete until you have saved each of the publications that you wish to add to your ORCID record.

    • To Save a citation to your record, click the Save icon. You will be prompted to edit the citation; after making any needed changes, click Add to List to save the citation to your ORCID record.

    • To Delete a citation from the import list, click the Delete (trash can) icon.

    • To Cancel the entire import, click the Cancel button above the list of citations.
