Add your education & employment data to your ORCID record

Introduction

Using the Education and Employment sections of your ORCID record you can record organizations that you have worked or studied at as well as details about your association with each organization.

Privacy

When manually adding education or employment information, you will see a privacy selector that lets you set who can see the information you enter. The options are:

  • Everyone, which is information anyone who looks at your record can see
  • Trusted Parties, which is only made available to organizations or individuals to which you have specifically granted access 
  • Only Me, which no one but you can see

Education

From your your ORCID record, go to Add education then Add manually.


In the Add Education pop-up you will enter the name of the school or institute you studied at in the Institution field.  As you type the name of the institute our system will automatically suggest possibilities from a pre-populated list, please note that this list is not maintained by ORCID but is provided by Ringgold.  Whenever possible you should select an option from this list as it is used when searching ORCID by organization.  You may select an option from the list and then change how the name will appear in your record if the institution is not correctly listed. Once an institution is selected, information about it will automatically populate other fields.

While some institutions will include department level listings, we ask users to pick the highest level of the organization and provide departmental information in the department field.

The fields in Education are:

  • Institution - The educational institution you attended. This is a required field.
  • City - City where the education institution you attended is located. This is a required field.
  • State/region - The state/region of the education institution you attended.
  • Country - The country the education institution is located in. This is a required field.
  • Department - The field or department(s) you specialized in.
  • Degree/title - The degree you have either earned or are working towards at the education institution.
  • Start date/End date - The start date and end date of your attendance at the education institution. If you are still attending the institution, you do not need to supply an end date.
If your educational institution is not listed, you can type out the information manually. Please note that when you add an institution from the list, even if you change the name, there is an established identifier which lets you be found in searches for the organization.

Employment

From your your ORCID record, go to Add employmnet then Add manually.

  • Institution/employer - The name of your employer. This is a required field to complete.
  • City - City the employer is based in. This is a required field to complete.
  • State/region - The state/region the employer is based in.
  • Country - The country the employer is based in. This is a required field to complete.
  • Department - The department you worked under (i.e. Customer Support, Research and Development, Biology, etc.)
  • Role/title - The title/role you were employed with at your company.
  • Start date/End date - The start and end date of your employment with the organization. If you are still with this company, you may leave the End Date blank.
If your employer is not listed, you can type out the information manually. Please note that when you add an organization from the list, even if you change the name, there is an established identifier which lets you be found in searches for the organization.
