(see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

  1. allow to have an additional list for 'chair publications'.

    since I often refrain from co-authoring a paper just since I'm the boss.

    Referees who like to judge the output of the group, however, need to see all publications.

    So I'd like to have a separate list of all publications of my group wher e I am not coauthor. To assign the paper to my chair, the corresponding author should be asked for permission to put it on the 'chair publication list'.

    • Improve delivery of the public data file

      The public data file is currently published as an uncompressed tar file that contains two copies of the data: one in XML and one in JSON.

      To save on bandwidth I suggest that you:

      * Publish two separate files, one for each format. Users then only need to retrieve the data file they need, its very unlikely someone will want both formats.
      * Compress the tar file using gzip

      I'm not sure what your plans for updating the file, but I'd suggest that you keep some historical copies to allow some analysis, e.g. on growth of number of ORCIDs, etc.

      • Capture Book Sections correctly

        If I transfer a book section from ResearcherID to ORCID the former editors of the book become co-authors.

          Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

          This involves two items:
          1. Contributor roles in the ORCID Registry; and
          2. Transfer of data between ResearcherID and ORCID.

          We have as a part of our 2017 goals addressing contributorship on the ORCID Registry as a part of implementing project CRedIT on ORCID records (see: https://trello.com/c/mBcwieED/10 ). At that point, systems which connect to ORCID to send and receive data, including ResearcherID, will be able to benefit from a standard method of indicating — or reading indications of — a researcher’s role on the ORCID record.

          We look forward to sharing more information on our progress in the near future.

            Thanks for the suggestion. We do think this is a good idea, however it’s somewhat complicate for us to add an additional cookie to our cookie policy which is needed to offer this option. I’m making this idea as under reivew while we consider this. In the meantime you may want to look into using a browser that will automatically remember your username.

              Our Metadata Working Group is currently reviewing the roles offered in the ORCID Registry. I’ll pass the suggestion of Artist or illustrator on to them and update this idea once the committee has made their final recommendations.

            • Could you try to add Bluebook citation format as an option for works?

              Bluebook is not offered as an option for citation format but it is common among legal scholars.

                We have added Bluebook citation formats to our list of improvements to consider in the future for the ORCID Registry.

                At present, you can use “unspecified” for bluebook citations.

                The list of work types offered in ORCID is from the CASRAI Output Standards, which you can find out more about at http://dictionary.casrai.org/research-personnel-profile/contributions/outputs.
                Rather than trying to maintain an inclusive list of work-types, ORCID has decided to use this vocabulary so we can focus on our main goal of providing unique identifiers. As the CASRAI vocabulary is updated, we will also update the work-type options in ORCID.

              • Clarify if an ORCID represent an individual as a person or just as a researcher

                It should be made clear (in the FAQ?) what an ORCID represent. It is currently unclear if it represents a person, or just that person while acting as a researcher.

                My best guess is the second - so it would be somewhat wrong for me to use my ORCID when describing the creator of my family photos.

                It is also currently somewhat unclear if an ORCID defines the same person under multiple names (I understand it does, but only because I added both my names for my ORCID)

                The discussion at http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-lod/2013Mar/0038.html highlights the need for clarity on such aspects…

                  An ORCID iD can be used with any works or activities you want, and it can represent whatever you think makes the sense to integrate with your own research. For many of our users that is just their professional works but it is up to each researcher to decide what to include their ORCID iD on.

                  We do agree that the FAQ could be increased to address issues like names more directly and will look into adding to it.

                    Just to give an update on this project:

                    We have a demo of the ORCID badge widget that you can test by going to https://orcid.org/my-orcid?widget and clicking on the link to “Share your ORCID iD on other sites.”

                    Some of the feedback that we’ve received thus far is that it is quite large, and that it does not coincide with current iD display guidelines.

                    We expect to return to this project after we have finished deployment of the 2.0 API and have released the updated display guidelines in 2017.

                  • Default "email" privacy level to "limited"

                    I am working in entegrating an external service to ORCID, by letting local users authenticate via ORCID's OAuth.
                    Since we keep track of user email address, it would be extremely handy if by default email addresses were available in ORCID's profile, so that third party services like ours could match local users with existing profiles.

                      We’d like to update on this suggestion:

                      It is unlikely that we will set the default email visibility to allow trusted parties to view it. However, we will soon be working on a feature to allow clients to request permission to access the individual’s email address, even if that address is normally hidden.                       This is a great suggestion, but one that needs review before we can act on it. As ORCID is an international undertaking we have to comply with privacy regulations in numerous countries, some of which affect how we are able to share email address, even with trusted parties.

                    • Implement client-side OAuth authentication

                      So that client-side (usually Javascript) applications can interact with the ORCID API, please support client-side OAuth authentication.

                        Thanks for the suggestion. We’re concerned that client-side OAuth can be a serious security issue, and it would take our team a long time to work through adding it securely. At this point you might instead look into using a nodejs OAuth Proxy.

                      • Mark up lists of works with metadata

                        Lists of works should be marked up with metadata; unAPI, ideally, COinS at a minimum.

                        This will be more easily done if the "<a href="http://support.orcid.org/forums/175591-orcid-ideas-forum/suggestions/3266048-metadata-for-publications-should-be-entered-using-">Metadata for publications should be entered using a form _not_ free text</a>" ticket is implemented.

                            To update, contributors is a field that organizations posting funding information can add to funding items on the ORCID record. (See the XSD for fundings: https://github.com/ORCID/ORCID-Source/blob/master/orcid-model/src/main/resources/record_2.0/funding-2.0.xsd )

                            ORCID pages do not seem to be valid HTML5 according to
                            http://validator.w3.org

                                We’ve combined a couple suggestions about researcher roles into this idea where we can keep you updated with progress. ORCID is planning to review the role options that we capture and how those roles are displayed shortly. We will be including all the ideas proposed in the forum in that review and will provide an update once that review is done.                                     Thanks for the suggestion. We’re working on adding functionality that encourages common values in various free text entry fields in ORCID, such as keywords. Our working plan is to “seed” the list of possibilities with values that we may expect to be there. As a user types an answer, suggestions from this list are provided. When a user enters a value that isn’t part of the original list, it will become a part of the list when a certain number of people have entered the same value. These added entries then behave the same way as the seeded list does.

                                    This way, there is an organically growing list of expected fields, and the user is more likely to choose from this list because the interface will autocomplete for the user, but the user is not confined to existing values.

                                    We’re hoping to have this function available in six months…

                                  • Correct apostrophied author names in Scopus import

                                    My surname contains an apostrophe. After importing from SCOPUS, all of my papers have my surname as O\'Boyle.

                                      We are still working on this issue. We’ve corrected it with Scopus so no more errors like this will be imported in the Registry and are now working on clean up existing records with this problem.

                                      Sorry for our delay in responding to this bug. We are working to correct this error, but the developer we’ve worked with at Scopus has been on long term leave so we haven’t been able to resolve the issue as quickly as we had hoped. I will update you when this bug is fixed and I appreciate you bringing it to our attention.

                                    • Login state should be consistent throughout the site

                                      Once a user logs in, the "My ORCID Record" will correctly display options for logged-in users (such as "sign out" the sign out link).

                                      From there, click on the ORCID logo will bring you to the about.orcid.org page, which looks as though you have to log in again. For instance, the "sign out" button is replaced by a "sign in" button. The user also loses the links to their "My ORCID Record" page.

                                          This is a great idea, but one we will not be able to get to soon. Right now we’re focused on major functionality and fixing bugs. But we plan to come back to these smaller but time consuming improvements soon.
