ORCID iDeas Forum

Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. More information about why a researcher should sign up for an ORCID

ORCID is a great system - and, as a publisher, I love it when researchers use it - but there is little/no material on the website (eg in 'for researchers' section, or in FAQ) as to why authors would be motivated to sign up... we have had comments like 'oh, it's just another academia.edu' and 'oh, it's just another research gate' when we have tried to explain... there needs to be some information we can hand to them about why this would help them further their career, or get credit for their work, or make connections, or (most importantly) help…

Thanks for your suggestion for improving the ORCID Registry and related websites.

We’ve some further information on communicating ORCID to researches (see: http://www.slideshare.net/ORCIDSlides/overview-of-orcid-for-researchers and http://www.slideshare.net/ORCIDSlides/spreading-the-orcid-word-orcid-communications-webinar-june-2016), but improving resources on our main site is also on our to do list.

It’s also one of the topics for our upcoming videos in our How To? ORCID video series, see:
      https://orcid.uservoice.com/admin/forums/390876/suggestions/15531693

We’ll update this thread accordingly as we make further updates to ORCID for researches.

      Warm regards,
      ORCID Community Engagement and Support

    • Allow users to define default preferred source for works, e.g. Scopus, then CrossRef, then...

Users may use multiple sources to find all research outputs, e.g. Scopus, CrossRef, etc.. The metadata from these may vary and some may be more suitable for export to other systems, e.g. Elsevier's PURE.

It would be useful to allow users to set a default preferred source (or priority order) for the online sources they have set up. At present, the user can only change the preferred source, case by case, for each output.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry. We are considering this feature and will let you know if we decide to accept it for future development.

      • Develop tagging and filtering to support funding application requirements

It seems relatively common that online grant/fellowship application systems ask the applicant to enter a list of works that is more specific than the complete list available on an ORCID profile. For example, some just want just journal articles, or just pubmed-indexed articles, or they want a separate list of works that arose from their previous funding, etc.

If users could tag their works and then provide a link to a list of works filtered by specific tags, then I think there would be a real possibility of funders changing their application requirements to allow such links in place of…

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID registry.

Could you please provide further information about the tagging and filtering proposed? It would be useful if you could provide a single example.

        • A 'report this' button is implemented to prevent spamming the registry

I searched the ORCID registry for "school" and lots of spam 'profiles' for driving schools, yoga schools, etc came up in the search results. For example:

          http://orcid.org/0000-0001-7582-2402
          http://orcid.org/0000-0001-9587-8075
          http://orcid.org/0000-0001-6240-8560

ORCID has a process that runs each week aiming to identify potential suspect records, but it is dependent on keywords. I propose that ORCID implement a 'report this' button and we can crowdsource getting rid of these spam profiles?

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We shall put this as a feature under review. Let us know if you have any suggestions for how this may appear on the ORCID record.

For now, please continue to report any suspect records to support@orcid.org, as well as any suggested keywords to add to our regular spam search.

          • reduce the usage of scripting on your pages. Makes it really hard to use, particularly on mobile.

ORCID needleslly uses a lot of javascript to do, well, not much. HTML and HTML5 work regardless of your browser of choice, and don't make your website look really bad on lots of browsers (particualrly mobile!).

For example as I type this, there are several items of overlapping text, lots of cut-off text, and generally it looks very rough-cut.

            • Books with ISBNs should merge, regardless of hyphens or 10/13 digits

Books with the work identifier ISBN do not merge, if ISBNs are formally different. Formally different could mean hyphens or not, and 10 digits or 13.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the Registry.

This is a great suggestion and we’ve included it for consideration in the near future. We’ll update this thread once we have further details.

              • Add a preprint field to direct to openly available versions of a work

Please consider adding a new field for a preprint identifier or link that could be added to existing works. This would allow someone visiting a profile to find an openly accessible version of a work (e.g., journal or conference paper).

In many fields, "green open access" is more practical than "gold open access" due to a lack of recognized OA journals. Thus, many authors wanting to make a paper available will submit it to a preprint server (such as arXiv, figshare, or Zenodo) in addition to publishing in a traditional (closed) journal.

Currently, there doesn't seem to be an obvious…

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We’re going to add this to our list of improvements to consider for the future and will update here accordingly.

That said, do note that it is currently possible to import a work that is available from Figshare and Zenodo to the ORCID record via Datacite (see e.g. this document shared by ImpactStory http://goo.gl/Fjn8x ). : )

                • unnecessary horizontal scrolling

Please remove horizontal scrolling. It is quite annoying and does not serve any apparent purpose since the margins are empty anyway. It just makes the website feel a bit wiggly. Here is one example:
                  http://orcid.org/blog/2013/08/08/suggested-practices-collection-and-display-orcid-ids-publishing-workflows
Other ORCID pages lack the wiggliness.
I understand it might be platform dependent. I use Firefox 47.0 on Mac OS 10.10.5.

                  • Reflecting the items seen in "Also known as" and "Keywords" as separate lines

In the current status, the items seen in "Also known as" and "Keywords" reflect to the public view in a wrapped style as the following:

                    Name Middle Surname, Name,
                    M. Surname, N. M. Surname

I do recommend you to add an option to make each items as separate lines as the following:

                    Name Middle Surname,
                    Name, M. Surname,
                    N. M. Surname

                    • Mark up lists correctly

Please use list markup for lists of names, websites, other IDs, or keywords. This is not only semantically correct, per HTML specifications, but also improves accessibility for people using assistive software to access web pages.

Names would be best shown with each starting a new line (the present method can lead to confusion), but it is possible to style lists of keywords so that they are presented horizontally, with a visual separator such as a mid-dot. For websites and other DS, it is possible to style lists as at present, without bullets.

I'm happy to advise further if required.

                      • Create a visual flow sheet for ORCID and what sites/account it connects to

When I started research I signed up for an annoying number of aggregating/indexing sites, most of which connect to ORCID (researcherID, Scopus, uberwizard). But some of which don't, or have limited functionality with ORCID (NCBI, Google Scholar) or are considered social networking sites for adults (LinkedIN and ResearchGate). I couldn't keep them all straight, so I created a flow sheet for their interconnectedness. I would love to see an official flow sheet from you guys, even including sites that you DON'T currently connect to so that people don't spend 30 minutes trying to figure out how to link the two.…

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

This is a great idea that we would like to get to, but which would require a bit of work with a good design team to tackle.

We’re going to mark it as under review as we look into potential solutions.

In the meantime, it would be great if those interest could offer suggestions of what you would expect to see in such chart.

For example, what types of systems should be displayed? There are those systems which are evidently connected to ORCID from the Search & Link wizards on the Registry user interface, and there are other systems. There are other systems which are open to the public and allow users to connect their ORCID iDs, but which do not first start from the ORCID Registry. There are also closed systems — such as institutional systems or manuscript submission…

                        • Improve search, regarding double letters

One of the commonest spellings of names which contain double letters, such as my surname, Mabbett, is to omit one if the letters.

Search for neither "Andy Mabbet" nor "Andy Mabett" finds my ORCID record.

The search algorithm should handle such cases.

                          • develop more sophisticated workflows to reduce the chance of duplicate ORCIDs

ORCiD should provide the domain names of all known email addresses during “Record Creation with API”, to reduce duplicate ORCiDs.

for e.g:- I am “Tom Smith” working with AAF and creating a new record. Once I go through the registration process I would see
ORCID iD Email First Name(s) Last name Institution

                            0000-0003-1552-634x ****@csiro.au Tom Smith
This would at least allow me as a researcher to recognise the domains and decide if there is a record already belonging to me. As none of the domains are familiar to me, I would click…

                            • Would like to see Public/Private listed on Search Results

I would like a search on https://orcid.org/orcid-search/quick-search/?searchQuery=antony%20williams, as an example, to show hn additional column of Public YES/NO. When there are multiple names that are the same it would save having to open each one one at a time to check on available information

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

Our understanding is that the request is that there be an indication on the record as to whether a record (or section of a record) is indeed empty of data, or whether there is data, but the reader (be it an individual or an API client) receive an indication that the data is not visible to them.

This indicator would in turn be reflected in the search result, e.g., in the Other Names section, or, should “Affiliation/institution” be a visible column (as when a new user registers and their name is a hit during the name disambiguation search), in that column.

                                Is this understanding correct?

If so, we shall put this forward as an idea to consider.

                                Hello,

                                Thank you for your suggestion.

                              • Allow re-ordering of information 'blocks' in ORCID profile

At the moment my profile is ordered with 'Education' at the top, followed by things like employment, funding and 'works'.

I would like to have my publications ('works') at the top of my profile instead of at the bottom, but there doesn't seem to be a way that I can change the order of the boxes.
I could set all the other boxes to 'private' so that only my publications show up, but I don't want to simply hide all the other information.

It would be excellent if you could allow users to move the 'blocks' of information in the…

This is an interesting suggestion that we will raise with our user interface design team for consideration.

                                • Add a version indicator to work XSD.

A work's source provider needs to know what meta-data version of the was used. Add a version indicator to a work XSD. This indicator can be visible to the author, but it would not be displayed in the brief view.

I have 906 works and counting, and it is somewhat taxing on my computer (and probably your server) memory to have them all in a single screen. Would be nice to split it in several screens or pages.

Just to give an update on this: Reviewing the contributor roles in the ORCID Registry, and how or where researchers or organisations assert those roles, is a part of our goals in 2017. Watch this space for more information in the coming year.

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry. We have been collaborating with Mozilla Science Lab, BioMed Central (BMC), Public Library of Science (PLoS), the Wellcome Trust, and Digital Science, among others, to develop a prototype for assigning badges to individuals based on the contributor role vocabulary developed by Project CRediT in 2015. ORCID will be incorporating these contributor roles into our Registry. For each contribution (such as an article, dataset, or presentation) connected to and displayed on an ORCID record, the record holder will be able to select their role(s) they played from the Project CRediT list.

                                        Contributorship Open Badges is…

                                      • Use ORCID as basis for permanent researcher email addressing (e.g. for contact email on papers)

A powerful use of ORCID could be as a persistent researcher email address, that we could use as contact email for our publications. That way other researchers could reach us as we (grad students, profs, corporate researchers) change our affiliations. Format could be <my_orcid>@orcid.org and/or <orcid_alias>@orcid.org. Emails would be re-directed to whatever we have in our records.
