I suggest that...

ORCID to become a feeder for VIAF

http://viaf.org/
Yet another way to handle the multiple IDs people will have is this authority - already well-established and funded

Thanks for submitting your idea to improve the ORCID Registry. We agree that integration with other systems is important, and would like your help making your idea a reality.

Integrating with another system requires a partnership; it is not something ORCID can do on its own. We need two things to get started: a short specification describing the system and how ORCID should interact with it, and also contact information for who within that organization to partner with to carry out the integration.

Could you provide us with this information or help direct us to who to talk with? Thank you.

    Warm regards,
    ORCID Community Engagement and Support

Since 2012 this has been suggested / requested. Back then there was a promise that coordination with ISNI and VIAF was a high priority. In 2013 there was a post by Laura H about the differences in purpose and scope among the name authorities. What wasn't discussed was the overlap and how to manage that. I read that ISNI set aside a range of identifiers for ORCID use but Ive read nothing since that time.

The ORCID membership includes very powerful companies and organizations.

The ORCID operating expenses are _under_budget_ by large amounts that could support employees of contract workers who could make this (and other requested) improvements.

While the ORCID goals: 1) build membership; 2) increase the number of registered ORCID; 3) Support adoption by streamlining the integration process [for universitites and publishers]; and 4) Increase international outreach .

None of these goals include objectives that would address user requests.
