ORCID iDeas Forum

Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

As there hasn’t been any activity on this idea in a couple months I’m going to close it. If you still wish to follow up please contact me at support@orcid.org

I’m so sure exactly what you are asking about here. If you can you provide a little more information about your suggestion for ORCID I’ll do my best to respond.

In order to test that the ORCID Registry is working correctly we have to maintain test accounts for our staff to use. We try to mark these accounts as test or as belonging to staff so they are not mistaken for actual researchers, but we need to keep them in the database. In this case works by and about Albert Einstein were added as part of testing the works import function which is why the account was returned in your search results. We try to maintain a minimal amount of these accounts and the information they contain is frequently updated and deleted but they will occasionally show up in search results.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’m declining it for now as we don’t have any major redesign of the site planned, but I can make sure your font suggestion is considered next time we re-do the ORCID website.

Requiring an ORCID iD on all grants would be a great way to help identify the recipients, but we can’t control what granting organizations decided to do. We will be including grants in the ORCID Registry soon and partnering with more grant giving organization to start using ORCID iDs in their application process- but we can’t make anything compulsory.

There are other organizations that currently provide IDs for institutions and organizations, so ORCID isn’t looking to expand into that area right now.

Once we implement affiliations we will have a system to identify organizations within the ORCID Registry, but we don’t plan to expand it beyond that

This is an interesting suggestion, but it falls outside of the main mission of ORCID and a number of other organizations provide this service now. We may reconsider after we have completed more core functionality but we’re declining it for now.

              • Automatic filtering of papers suppousedly of my authorship

For those who have a fairly popular family name (like Smith, Lee or Lopez) it is a pain to go through the thousands of would-be paper candidates offered by the system. It will be far easier (and I think, manageable) to let the user supply an URL where the list of its papers, more or less structured, is available. With such hint, you can filter the thousand of candidates to left just a few candidates. Otherwise, we will never consider to update the ORCID list of papers

I’m sorry to hear you had trouble locating the papers your authored. We are working on improving the built-in CrossRef search in the near future. Unfortunately, we can’t import or even filter search results off a text list of papers. Publications need to be in a standard format (ORCID Messages XML) in order for the ORCID Registry to be able to work with them. The system we currently offer for importing papers all provide data in this format.

In addition to our built-in search, there are currently three other ways to import works to your ORCID record which may be more helpful for you.

                  1. You can import publications associated with your Scopus Author ID by following the link to ‘Import Research Activities’ in the left column of your ORCID profile.

                  2. If you have a profile at ResearcherID you can add works by logging-in to researcherid.com, linking…

An ORCID record sounds like a great birthday present to me! Unfortunately our privacy restrictions mean we can’t create records on behalf of users or authorize access to import works from our partners. But I hope you encourage Eugene to set up his own ORCID account.

                  • Provide email alias

For instance in the form of name@researcher.orcid.org. The researcher can update the alias when they change institution.
Having a permanent, while professional looking email address is particularly important for junior researchers who regularly have to change institution. These aliases could be used in publications. As such they are expected to attract very little traffic.

This is a neat idea, but it is out of the current scope (and budget) of ORCID. It’s something we might be able to reconsider after we’ve completed more immediate goals to add functionality and integrations, but I’ve marked the idea as declined as it will be a long time before we could ever act on it.

                    • Allow to UNflag ideas as inappropriate

I just clicked by mistake and flagged an idea as inappropriate. The option to "unflag" should be added, active for at least a few minutes.
Better yet, when someone clicks "flag as inappropriate" a pop-up asking for confirmation should be shown.
Updating the page to show "FLAGGED BY YOU" (in red, instead of uppercase, and with a note that "person who suggested idea will not know, don't worry") could be useful.

Thanks for the suggestion- I can see how accidental flagging can happen too easily. ORCID’s Support Desk and Ideas Forum are run on software from UserVoice and we only have the options they offer. But I can pass your suggestion on to the User Voice Ideas Forum and they might add it with future updates.

You also don’t need to worry about good ideas accidentally being lost. The ORCID team reviews everything that is posted to the iDeas Forum and comes into the help desk ourselves so nothing is overlooked- even if we can’t respond to it immediately.

Openness is one of the core ORCID principles. Consistent with that, Registry data marked as public by users is made available to the public under a CC0 license. Our goal is to ensure that all scholarly communication stakeholders have broad access to what we hope becomes a vital part of the scholarly communication infrastructure.

CC0 was developed by Creative Commons (see http://creativecommons.org/about/cc0).

For those who do not wish to share information broadly, you may mark items in your record “limited access” and share only with trusted parties, or mark them “private”.

                            Cheers,

The idea is to post an open discussion on certain research aspect which is being perused by the member and everyone interested will post their views and understanding on that particular aspect. This will mostly benefit the young researchers to connect with the peer research community, who can mentor them for advancing to better science. Also, this should open up collaborative activities among the interested contributors which will ultimately lead to better understanding of atmosphere and climate change.

Thank you for posting your idea to the ORCID iDea forum. Your suggestion would be helpful for researchers and could be facilitated by ORCID. However, at the current time discussion boards are outside the mission of ORCID. We are focused on providing a persistent and unique identifier for researchers.

That said, we do provide a public API and member APIs and encourage the community to develop applications using ORCID data. Your idea would be possible to implement using these APIs, and could then be customized to particular user communities.
