Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Exporting citations

It would be great to export citations to other systems. For example, ORCID found all my publications but researcherID can't. It would be great if I could export them to researcherID, endnote, web of science, etc.

We have an update to this.

Those who follow our Trello board may have seen that an option to export works on the ORCID record to BibTeX is now in our hidden features awaiting final testing, documentation, and launch.

This means that we are in the final stages of testing before it goes live — and we’d love your feedback! The feature is available as a hidden flag on your personal ORCID record. Once you have signed into your account, go to:
      https://orcid.org/my-orcid?bibtexExport

From there, choose “Export” from the works bar, and you will be able to save your works as a BibTeX file.

Some early issues that have been identified:

      • Works in non-Latin scripts (Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Thai, etc.) do not export properly (only ???s)
      • Not all unique identifiers are included with the exported BibTeX
      • Little information given about the export feature
      • No link to documentation about exporting BibTeX

    • Link "Grant" entries with "Work" entries

This feature will ease the identification of the outcome from funded research, for the stakeholders.

        Hi,

Just letting you know that we’re moving this suggestion from Postposed to planned as it is something we want to start working on this year. We’re still in the early phases of figuring out the best way to link Works and Grants but we’ll keep you updated as we make progress on this feature.

        Best,

      • Search text should remain in the search box to facilitate revision and connect the user to the search results

The search string should remain in the search box so that it is easier for users to revise a search and to also help them make sense of the search results.

This is a great idea, but one we will not be able to get to soon. Right now we’re focused on major functionality and fixing bugs. But we plan to come back to these smaller but time consuming improvements soon.

        • Fix typo in register page re notifications

I see two issues on the registration page https://orcid.org/register , in the block about email frequency:

          1) The first sentence has a typo in "... like changes to your ORCID record and new and events." and perhaps could anyway be a little clearer about what might generate a notification.

          2) If most users leave the default weekly frequency setting then maybe you can ignore this second comment. However, when I see "Weekly summary" it sounds as if a user should expect weekly emails when, in practice, this is the maximum allowed with likely much less frequent notifications. Perhaps terms that…

          • Capture Book Sections correctly

If I transfer a book section from ResearcherID to ORCID the former editors of the book become co-authors.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

              This involves two items:
              1. Contributor roles in the ORCID Registry; and
              2. Transfer of data between ResearcherID and ORCID.

We have as a part of our 2017 goals addressing contributorship on the ORCID Registry as a part of implementing project CRedIT on ORCID records. At that point, systems which connect to ORCID to send and receive data, including ResearcherID, will be able to benefit from a standard method of indicating — or reading indications of — a researcher’s role on the ORCID record.

We look forward to sharing more information on our progress in the near future.

              Warm regards,
              ORCID Community Team

            • Allow a sole inventor listed on a patent to chose "inventor" rather than "co-inventor" or "other inventor" which are the only options listed

Lots of inventions have a sole inventor. "other inventor" just sounds strange. "co-inventor" is just incorrect.

Just to give an update on this:
Presently one is unable to specify one’s contributorship on the ORCID record manually, although this still appears in our XSD.

We have revisiting contributor roles as one of our 2017 goals and hope to have an update on this and related issues in the coming year.

                Warm regards,

              • Allow authors to list related work (e.g. a dataset or supplementary material) under a publication in a related works or tabbed section.

At the moment every work shows up the same. It would be great if you could link subsidiary or related works under a publication, for example, a link to the Dryad or Figshare source for the underlying data or to a preprint repository for an author manuscript.

This is a great suggestion and one that’s in our long term plan. In addition to linking works we want to be able to link funding items that may have support the works and create other connections between items on an ORCID record. While we won’t be able to add this soon as we have so much other functionality we’re working on, this is part of the plan for ORCID.

                • Console to manage API credentials

Managing API credentials, redirect URIs etc is cumbersome work for both ORCid Support in making changes and integrators and software developers requesting for changes. Google-style console to manage API credentials and properties associated to them would ease workflows for both parties.

                  https://console.developers.google.com/apis/

Sure, Google has a lot of functionalities added, but a simple list of API IDs for each consortium member and management interface to update API redirect URIs would be a good start.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry. We’re glad to hear that this is something that you’d like to see, as it’s something that we’d like to see too!

Currently individual ORCID record holders can manage their ORCID Public API credentials by clicking Development Tools on the registry navigation (direct link: https://orcid.org/developer-tools).

We have as goal to allow members to do the same on with the Member API credentials. You can keep a track of progress on this by following our public Trello boards: https://trello.com/orcid2

Thanks for your suggestion for improving the ORCID Registry. Now that signing in with your institutional credentials is an ORCID feature (see: http://orcid.org/blog/2016/05/21/what-was-my-password-again ), we are working with institutions who have ORCID integrations to develop this process, something that we’re currently calling “institutional roundtrip” (this name may change).

What will happen is that, once you sign in using your institutional credentials, the institution will a) request permission to update your record; and b) update your ORCID record with your institutional affiliation.

For those institutions who may be interested, you can find a related workshop we ran on this at I1 2016 on our GitHub:
                      https://github.com/ORCID/i2-workshop-2016

Keep a look out on our ORCID blog for more information — we’ll be sure to update here as well.

                      Warm regards,

                    • Change the text displayed for Private or Limited Access profiles

I'm helping a researcher set up his ORCID record. He has chosen the Limited Access privacy option.

The text that displays in his public profile is:
                      "No information added yet."

My suggestion is to change this wording to reflect the privacy settings selected by the profile owner. In this case, the information is added but is not publicly viewable. It would be more helpful to have a message such as:
                      "This profile is private." OR
"This is a Limited Access profile."

                      Thanks for considering this suggestion.

                      • make the works editing page a full page, not a popup window.

Currently, the works editing page appears as a popup window with the left/right margins grayed out. But it is not clear. And if you click in either of these gray margins, the work you are currently editing disappears with all changes lost. Perhaps include a pop-up window (that appears when you click outside of the editing box) warning you you are about to lose all unsaved info? Or maybe autosave changes? Or perhaps make the editing page a whole page and not just a popup page.

We are working on a contributors feature that lets you create links with other researcher you worked with on publications, grants, and other activities. This new feature is on our plan for Quarter three of 2013, so it won’t be done soon, but I’ll update you as soon as it’s in place.

                          • to handle accented characters as they used to be handled

We think of making all co-workers of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (Hungary) have an Orcid ID. This would be great, but we have a problem. Most names in Hungary have accents (like meny names in French, German, Polish...). E.g. I am registered as István Kollár: 0000-0002-4807-0476
In most systems, a search with unaccented characters (Istvan Kollar) returns all hit with or without accents. However, when I search for Kollar, I have no hits, even with "Also search other names" on (I do have added all these name versions). I can find my name with "Kollár" only. But…

                              Hi,

Thanks for reminding us about this bug. We’re actually in the process of switching how we do search (we’re moving from Solr to Elastic search). Once we’ve completed that update, which is scheduled for this summer, we’ll look at adjusting our search to work the way you very nicely described.

                              Thanks,

                            • Initialized given names in search index & also exposed in API

A data source I am using to discover potential ORCID ids may/may not have initials as given-names. If your Lucene index had an EdgeNGram on given-names, to help accommodate incoming queries that contain abbreviated given-names, this would be immensely useful.

Alternatively, an additional, computed field like "given-name-initials" with EdgeNGram would be equally useful and would not change the behaviour of your existing Solr field, "given-names". A relatively simple regex-based method from https://github.com/berkmancenter/namae/blob/master/lib/namae/name.rb#L178 might prove useful.

                                Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion. After discussing this with our development team this looks like something we can do using your initial suggestion of using EdgeNGram on the given-names field.

I’ve added this to our list of projects to get to this year. But our developers are working on a number of other major improvements to the ORCID Registry, so I don’t have an exact timeline as when we’ll get to this.

                                Best,

                              • modify the clickable area of the search box

The search box area shows as a gray bar, but one has to click in the left side of the box for the search function to be apparent. I have shown this site to several people, and when they navigate the site, there is confusion when the right side of the box is clicked and nothing happens. It decreases the utility of the registry, because a first-time user may decide it is not worth registering when a search cannot be done.

                                  Hi,

We understand your frustration with the search box and we’ll be fixing it soon! We’re working on a new look for the ORCID website and as part of that we’re changing how the search box looks and can be clicked on.

                                • Education & Employment sections collapsed by default in profile's public display

Maybe the public display of one's profile should start with the Education & Employment sections collapsed - most visitors would look for other people's science work in the first place. Just feels more effective this way - to me, at least - it's not a privacy scare.

Thanks for the suggestion. We like the idea of being able to collapse parts of a public record, especially as we add more sections to it. We’ve added this to our plans for when we redesign the public display.

This is a great suggestion. I’ve added “How to Link to ORCID profiles” to our list of planned documentation and I hope to have it online in the next month. I’ll update this idea once that How To is completed.

Thanks for the suggestion. We’re working on adding functionality that encourages common values in various free text entry fields in ORCID, such as keywords. Our working plan is to “seed” the list of possibilities with values that we may expect to be there. As a user types an answer, suggestions from this list are provided. When a user enters a value that isn’t part of the original list, it will become a part of the list when a certain number of people have entered the same value. These added entries then behave the same way as the seeded list does.

This way, there is an organically growing list of expected fields, and the user is more likely to choose from this list because the interface will autocomplete for the user, but the user is not confined to existing values.

We’re hoping to have this function available in six months…

                                      • Clarify if an ORCID represent an individual as a person or just as a researcher

It should be made clear (in the FAQ?) what an ORCID represent. It is currently unclear if it represents a person, or just that person while acting as a researcher.

My best guess is the second - so it would be somewhat wrong for me to use my ORCID when describing the creator of my family photos.

It is also currently somewhat unclear if an ORCID defines the same person under multiple names (I understand it does, but only because I added both my names for my ORCID)

The discussion at http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-lod/2013Mar/0038.html highlights the need for clarity on such aspects…

An ORCID iD can be used with any works or activities you want, and it can represent whatever you think makes the sense to integrate with your own research. For many of our users that is just their professional works but it is up to each researcher to decide what to include their ORCID iD on.

We do agree that the FAQ could be increased to address issues like names more directly and will look into adding to it.
