Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Present HANDLE as links in the user interface

Currently work identifiers, like DOIs, arXivIDs, PubMed IDs and PMC IDs, are all treated as links in the user interface, but handles are not linked. This means that we feel it necessary to upload the handle both as a work identifier and as a URL, which is unnecessary duplication of information. Can you please have the Handle work identifier presented as a link?

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We’re going to add this to our list of improvements to consider for the future and will update here accordingly.

    • Affiliation search - limit to current

API search for Affiliation gives result set that includes records where affiliation matches records having a matching affiliation in the past (but current affiliation(s) is not a match).

Enhancement request - ability to limit affiliation searches to records that match only most current affiliation(s) in researcher's ORCID record (i.e. exclude records where affiliation match was in the past / or is not current).

As suggested from support, one possible way would be to hook into where Affiliation has no ending date or is null on ending date.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry’s API search.

We’ll take this suggestion into consideration as we look into further improvements of our affiliations search feature and will update when we have further information.

      • develop more sophisticated workflows to reduce the chance of duplicate ORCIDs

ORCiD should provide the domain names of all known email addresses during “Record Creation with API”, to reduce duplicate ORCiDs.

for e.g:- I am “Tom Smith” working with AAF and creating a new record. Once I go through the registration process I would see
ORCID iD Email First Name(s) Last name Institution
        0000-0001-0152-676x ****@qut.edu.au Tom Smith
        0000-0001-0182-8781 ****@latrobe.edu.au Tom Smith
        0000-0003-1552-634x ****@csiro.au Tom Smith
This would at least allow me as a researcher to recognise the domains and decide if there is a record already belonging to me. As none of the domains are familiar to me, I would click…

            Hello,

Thank you for your suggestion for improving the ORCID Registry.

Could you suggest some layouts that you would expect to see as an email signature? And by ‘ORCID logo’, might you refer to the ORCID iD icon? (Green circle with the white iD)

            Thank you.

          • Place more controls on DOI entry and group more DOI variants together

Place controls on how DOIs are entered in the manual entry form so that only the DOI (not the link form of the DOI can be entered). Right now people can enter a DOI in the forms "http://dx.doi.org/DOI" or "http://doi.org/DOI" and these will end up in their record and will not be grouped properly with duplicate records from other sources. Another fix would be to treat "http://dx.doi.org/DOI", "https://dx.doi.org/DOI", "https://doi.org/DOI", and "http://doi.org/DOI" as duplicates of DOI for the purposes of grouping.

Thanks for your suggestion for improving the Registry.

Our policy is to not change data that the user or member has added to the Registry. Once thing we can do is set the automatic URL that will be displayed when members or users only add the identifier and not the identifier URL. Earlier this year we updated this so the default is https://doi.org/[DOI] rather than https://dx.doi.org/[DOI]. See: https://trello.com/c/OfYenJ21/3137

We’re also preparing a review for identifier validation and case sensitivity. (See also: https://support.orcid.org/forums/175591/suggestions/16897273 ) We’ll take this into consideration as we approach this with respect to DOIs and other identifiers.

We’ll update this post when we have more information to share. Thanks again for your suggestion!

            • sort entries in the education, employment and funding sections by end date instead of start date

If there are two or more concurrent grants, for example, sorting by end date usually produces a more reasonable order.

              Consider the following situation:
              Grant 1: $500 000, 01/2014 - 12/2016
              Grant 2: $15 000, 12/2014-04/2015

Those are now displayed in the order Grant 2, Grant 1 and will be displayed this way even in mid-2016, when no one cares about Grant 2 anymore. The same is true for the tab education, where e.g. a short stay at a foreign university always pops to the top.

Sorting by end dates solves these issues, because the topmost entry is either the…

Thanks again for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We’re looking into this issue and would like to raise a question for your consideration. What do you think should be done in instances of open end dates? For example, an employment may be on an open-ended contract — should this be understood to be active and therefore floated to the top of the list?

                Many thanks for your interest.

                Warm regards,

              • Search by works metadata

There's a number of pieces of information in works metadata: author, journal, year, volume, issue, title, possibly DOI, etc.

It would be great to be able to search on these pieces of information.

I had someone contact me that wanted to use the R ORCID client I maintain to search for works for only 2015 for all researchers at a specific university.

As far as I know this can't be done with the API, correct?

I tried to answer his question with the R client after pulling down works, parsing the bibtex citation, etc. - see here https://gist.github.com/sckott/41a400341180e967d5405642537b7c1e

Thank you for your suggestion on improving the ORCID Registry.

We have an update (March 2017) that the current version of the API search in 2.0 includes searching works by identifiers and title: https://members.orcid.org/api/tutorial/search-orcid-registry

(All identifiers can be used. The current list is at https://pub.orcid.org/v2.0/identifiers/ )

We’ve also added suggestions for increasing the searchable works metadata to things to consider for future development. These would generally be understood to be the supported fields supported in ORCID (see our Works XSD: https://github.com/ORCID/ORCID-Source/blob/master/orcid-model/src/main/resources/record_2.0/work-2.0.xsd ).

Note that author would generally not be one considered as we do not have an author field. We do support the addition of contributors, but do not have clear guidance on the at present— we expect this to come out of our discussions related to Project credit, etc. — see our User/Member Interface Improvements goal for 2017: https://trello.com/c/mBcwieED/10

                • Keep Institution Orcid profiles distinct from Author Orcid profiles

I've come across several profiles that were created by Institutions, e.g. by a university library or department, rather than by authors. These institutional profiles pull in articles written by various authors (ones belonging to that institution). Clearly this is a different use of Orcid and should be kept distinct from Author Orcid profiles.

                    Hi,

Thanks for letting us know about this issue. ORCID record are intended only for individuals, institutions should not be creating ORCID iDs. If you can let me know any more records you find that were created by institutions I’ll follow up with them to close those ORCID records.

                    Thanks,

                  • Add Digital Certificates

Either create a digital certificate associated with the ID, or allow user to identify an existing certificate to associate with the ID. DigiCert and InCommon are examples of certificate sources, but others are possible.

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

We will be forming a working group shortly to look at what other items researchers should be able to add to their ORCID record, including digital certificates and we will keep you updated.

In the meantime, please suggest the types of certificates you’d like to be able to associate with your ORCID record and why this would be valuable.

                    • Including ORCID in metadata markup for web pages

                      Hello;

I have spent some time recently looking at adding metadata to my publication pages on my webpage that facilitate sharing on linkedin, google+, facebook, and twitter and that also provide extra information to google scholar and altmetrics.com. Altmetrics checks mendeley.com and mendeley.com lists my ORCID.

Further integration could be useful in 2 ways:
                      1) allowing for inclusion of ORCID for each author in markup for Google Scholar (google scholar supports Highwire Press markup of the form citiation_author, citation_title, etc.) -- an additional markup tag such as citation_ORCID (for example) could help to provide ORCID information to google scholar.

                      • the separators for the ORCID be figure dashes

A figure dash is the same width as a digit and makes numbers separated by dashes easier to read. A figure dash is ‒ in HTML. In practice most other people will use hyphens and search engines should match either.

                        • API v2.0 be allowed to update the biography as API v1.2 currently can

We're beginning a project asked for by our academics to allow them to have an on campus "research hub" that can then push details of their publications, funding, etc out to the myriad of different third party services they use, including ORCID. As part of the early stage development of this I've got some code running the successfully updates a user's biography in ORCID via the v1.2 API in the sandbox. Works well.

I've now read that API v1.2 will be retired later in 2017, so tried to move my code to API v2.0 in the sandbox. Unfortunately in v2.0…

Thanks for your suggestion to improve upcoming versions of the ORCID API.

Unlike most other parts of the ORCID record, the biography is a single field — it hasn’t a put code as it exists only in the singular. So to update it, your system would need to fully overwrite the biography, potentially removing what the user has already input.

The rationale behind not having the biography field be editable by any party other than the user is the same as why users cannot edit data that a client application has added: only the source of the data should be able to edit that data.

Could you provide some suggestions for consideration of how this could benefit users and workflows that could work for all parties?

                            Thank you.

                            Warm regards,

                            • use ISO 8601 on the home page

                              http://orcid.org/ it says

                              12/08/2014

could be 12 August or December 8

use non-ambiguous ISO 8601 format instead. Also avoids bias towards US or European format.

We’re reopening this request as we’ve been notified that there are some dates which are not ISO 8601 complaint. We are looking to address this issue.

                                We’ve thus far found two:
                                https://orcid.org (news list, right column)
                                https://orcid.org/statistics

If you see any others on orcid.org or members.orcid.org, please let us know.

(n.b. support.orcid.org is hosted on a third-party service, so we need to investigate whether they can enable ISO-8601 on the forum section of the site.)

                                Warm regards,

                                • Users have finer control over access by Trusted Organizations

Currently access by Trusted Organizations is all or none. It would be great if users could specify the access type for each organization, e.g. with checkboxes or sliders. In addition, a panel to set defaults for new links to trusted orgs., e.g. always allow contact info to be seen, never allow activity to be edited, etc.

                                  • Create a visual flow sheet for ORCID and what sites/account it connects to

When I started research I signed up for an annoying number of aggregating/indexing sites, most of which connect to ORCID (researcherID, Scopus, uberwizard). But some of which don't, or have limited functionality with ORCID (NCBI, Google Scholar) or are considered social networking sites for adults (LinkedIN and ResearchGate). I couldn't keep them all straight, so I created a flow sheet for their interconnectedness. I would love to see an official flow sheet from you guys, even including sites that you DON'T currently connect to so that people don't spend 30 minutes trying to figure out how to link the two.…

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

This is a great idea that we would like to get to, but which would require a bit of work with a good design team to tackle.

We’re going to mark it as under review as we look into potential solutions.

In the meantime, it would be great if those interest could offer suggestions of what you would expect to see in such chart.

For example, what types of systems should be displayed? There are those systems which are evidently connected to ORCID from the Search & Link wizards on the Registry user interface, and there are other systems. There are other systems which are open to the public and allow users to connect their ORCID iDs, but which do not first start from the ORCID Registry. There are also closed systems — such as institutional systems or manuscript submission…

                                    • ignore stopwords when alphabetizing titles

Looking at the other requests here, you've clearly done a lot already to improve the interface. One tiny thing (I submitted this as a help request before I found this forum -- sorry); I suggest you ignore stopwords ("a", "the", etc.) when alphabetizing titles so that titles starting with "An observation on ...", "A plea for ...", "A method for ..." don't all end up at the beginning of the alphabetic list ...

                                      thanks!

                                      • Books with ISBNs should merge, regardless of hyphens or 10/13 digits

Books with the work identifier ISBN do not merge, if ISBNs are formally different. Formally different could mean hyphens or not, and 10 digits or 13.

                                        • When editing, only the explicit "save" or "cancel" should do anything.

In particular, when clicking on the background outside of the editing box, nothing should happen. This often is done by mistake, and all changes are lost.

If there are "save" and "cancel" buttons, then only these should do anything: not clicking elsewhere, not hitting return.

I also notice that "website design" is not one of the categories, so I posted it here.

Thanks for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

This is a good idea, but isn’t something that we presently have the capacity to work toward at the moment. We’re going to mark it as under review, so that we can consider it as an improvement after our current release cycle for version 2.0 of our API.
