Thanks for your ideas. The process to turn an idea into an active part of the ORCID Registry is described in the article How are new features decided? (see link) While we want to get to every suggestion, our limited staff time means that some features will have to wait until future development cycles. We look forward to reading your ideas.

I suggest that...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Make it possible to register

I tried signing up for an ORCID ID three times in three browsers (Chrome, Safari, Opera), and it never worked - when I'd filled in all the info it just returned me to the same page, with no error message.

    • Allow users to merge publications

I've imported my pubblication both from CrossRef and Scopus. Now I've some duplication in the works. You should allow the user to suggest if two or more entries have to be merged.

        Just to update this:

We now offer the ability for users to group duplicate versions of works on their ORCID record. The way the ORCID interface works is that publications which have the same identifier (like a PMID or DOI) are grouped together into one item. This way a publication isn’t listed multiple times if you added it from multiple sources, such as importing a publication from Scopus and adding it manually.

If a work has been imported from two different sources with different identifiers, you can manually group them together by creating a third version of the work which includes both identifiers. To do this click the ‘make a copy and edit’ button on one of the works, then in the edit window add the identifier that is listed on the other version of the work. When you save this new work with both identifiers it will group…

      • Allow grouping of works

There seems to be no way to manually group duplicate works (at least not works lacking an ID). Is this something that could be enabled — even if you limit the ability to a fuzzy match (e.g, the entries need to be “similar enough”; say similar titles, same journal and issue, an author in common, etc.)

        • Merging of preprint with published work when available?

Like many others, I am increasingly submitting my work to preprint servers prior to publication. I think this is a great way of publicising your work and overcoming some of the delays associated with the traditional publication and peer review process. I also think it's really useful that ORCID allows the inclusion of such preprints (e.g. from BioRxiv) in the works section. However, once the work is published in a peer reviewed journal, the relevance of preprint changes - it is still useful, because it gives a doi link to a 'non-paywalled' copy of the work, but it also means…

Thank you for your suggestion to improve the ORCID Registry.

ORCID does provide a way to group multiple versions of the same work together on the ORCID record. Grouping in the works section of the ORCID record is based on two versions of a work sharing a unique identifier which has the same relationship (“self” or “part of”).

If a work has been imported from two different sources with different identifiers (e.g. an arxiv and a DOI), you can manually group them together by creating a third version of the work which includes both identifiers. To do this click the ‘make a copy and edit’ button on one of the works, then in the edit window add the identifier that is listed on the other version of the work. When you save this new work with both identifiers it will group together all the works that contain either identifier

              Hello,

              Thanks for your question.

One can easily change one’s current email addresses and add new email addresses in one’s Account Settings at https://orcid.org/account

We encourage researchers to associate multiple email addresses with a single ORCID record since ORCID iD duplicate prevention has its roots in email matches. Personal and professional email addresses and even past emails or other forms of an address can be included to help ensure that a duplicate iD is not unintentionally created. Each address has its own privacy setting, and ORCID will not share any email information that you have marked private.

              Warm regards,
              ORCID Community Team

            • BibTeX import is flaky

First, thank you for enable BibTeX import. This was a long awaited feature.

The BibTex import option is however rather sensitive to the details of the BibTex record, and fails when it encounters fields that it can't deal with. These are standard field such as:

              month = may

              or

              date-modified = {2014-12-09T15:58:24GMT},

and the import simply fails without giving a detailed reason.

Secondly the import does not translate special characters correctly, such as umlauts or accented letters, for example

              {\"u} becomes ü rather than ü

Btw, Imports from CrossRef suffer from the same problem

                Hi,

We’re going to update this one and mark it as deleted, as the two main issues — standard BibTeX fields and special characters not parsing properly — have been addressed.

If you have additional suggestions for improving the BibTeX import feature, please share them at http://support.orcid.org/forums/175591/category/54056-research-activities-works

                Hi,

I wanted to let you know we’re still working on this issue but we need your help. If you’ve worked with BibTeX before, you’ll know that getting all of the encoding formats right is no easy task. We’ve already added a number of encoding formats for special characters (like u{a}, u{o} and \’e) in the BibTeX parser we use, but there are still several that have alluded us so far. We’d love your help to find all of those pesky encoding options for special characters.

How to contribute: Please add encoding options for special characters directly…

                    Hi,

We’ve just released a new interface that addresses the issue with duplicate works added from different sources. The new interface groups works together by the work’s identifiers so that duplicates are shown as multiple versions of a single work.

The full announcement for about the new interface is at http://orcid.org/blog/2014/12/11/new-feature-friday-new-orcid-record-interface

Hi, from the start the registration page has prevented mechanical creation of ORCID iDs. Rather than reCAPTCHA, we are using a honeypot method.

For more information about this and other ORCID Security features, please see our knowledge base article, “How do you keep the ORCID Registry secure?” which can be found at: http://support.orcid.org/knowledgebase/articles/136222

Thanks for your comment. Best, Laura

It would be great to export citations to other systems. For example, ORCID found all my publications but researcherID can't. It would be great if I could export them to researcherID, endnote, web of science, etc.

Thanks to everyone who voiced their support for works citations. Exporting works to BibTeX is now live on the ORCID Registry — try it out now!

Our user documentation on BibTeX has also been updated: https://support.orcid.org/knowledgebase/articles/390530

One important thing to note: What BibTeX citation is exported is dependent on whether there is an existing BibTeX citation on the individual work item. If you or a trusted organization have added a BibTeX citation, then that will be exported for that work, rather than the ORCID-generated BibTeX citation.

We’ve received some comments about other formats, such as PDF and RIS. We are actively developing PDF exports of the entire ORCID record, and we are looking into exports into RIS. Keep an eye on our Current Development Trello for the latest news:

I see two issues on the registration page https://orcid.org/register , in the block about email frequency:

                          1) The first sentence has a typo in "... like changes to your ORCID record and new and events." and perhaps could anyway be a little clearer about what might generate a notification.

                          2) If most users leave the default weekly frequency setting then maybe you can ignore this second comment. However, when I see "Weekly summary" it sounds as if a user should expect weekly emails when, in practice, this is the maximum allowed with likely much less frequent notifications. Perhaps terms that…

We’ve now revised the language about notifications on the registration form as follows:

How often would you like these notifications delivered to you via email?

We have revamped our site’s design scheme to have more contrasting colors as well as an open-source font accessible across multiple systems.

Let us know if you have any additional feedback on the design.

                              Warm regards,

Thanks to everyone for their support of this suggestion.

It is now possible to search for all researchers which have publicly asserted an affiliation with an institution using the ORCID API. This can be done in two methods:

You can find out more about this at our Members Support Center page on Finding ORCID record holders at your institution:
                                https://members.orcid.org/api/resources/find-myresearchers

                                Warm regards,
                                ORCID Community Team

                              • Colour contrast and readability

On the main ORCID site (especially on profile pages) would you consider making the text colour ever so slightly darker (and web safe) please?

I appreciate your response to similar suggestions in 2013 (e.g. http://goo.gl/EyY7M6) but doing some quick and minor CSS changes sooner would be really good as it would make it much easier to read text on screen.

For example, change the CSS colour #939598 to say #666666

Similarly the white text on green background could also be improved in terms of contrast. Anyway thank you for allowing us to suggest improvements and responding to suggestions.

                                Best…

Thanks for your suggestions to improve the ORCID Registry.

We’ve updated our colour scheme to more contrasting colours for readability along with changing to an open source font that offers multi-lingual support. Let us know if you have any additional comments.

Hi, A key reason that we do not require verification before being given access to an iD is to facilitate uninterrupted system-to-system communication, even when an individual starts at another site when they create their iD.

While we do not have a strict requirement that an email be verified before using the site, email verification is an integral piece of the ORCID Registry. Organizations and systems that connect to the Registry for information exchange are notified if an email address has been verified as part of this exchange. For those interactions where a verified email address is needed, the user can be prompted to verify the address before continuing.

That said, despite it not being a requirement, we are excited that 73% of our over 18,000 ORCID iDs have verified email addresses.

                                    Thanks for your comment.

There were several ideas related to the ways that names are entered, and what fields are included when describing a name. We are creating this idea to combine all of these ideas together. Best, Laura

Thanks for everyone’s suggestions. We’ve incorporated the ability to support many of the features suggested, e.g.:

                                      • Support for non-Latin character encodings for names
                                      • A credit/published name field that displays the version of the name you want to be shown on your record, including middle names (initials) and suffixes
                                      • The ability to list multiple versions of your name in the “also known as” field, and reorder them

For more on names in the ORCID Registry, see:

ORCID has always planned to release its source openly (MIT license), but hasn't done it yet. This suggestion is to do it *now*, so that many of us can help fix bugs.

This issue was resolved with the user. For anyone else having similar problems please contact us at support@orcid.org

Your email address doesn’t appear to be in our database, which would be why you are seeing that error. If you can follow up to your other post about registration not working- I can work with you to figure out what went wrong when you tried to register and fix it.

                                          Thanks,

                                        • fix the display of HTML tags in the biography field

The biography input textbox on the "My ORCID" page does accept some HTML tags and they are rendered correctly when viewing the private profile.
On the public profile website, however, they are displayed verbatim, which is really annoying.

Please specify which HTML tags are allowed and
                                          * make those which are allowed work with the public profile
                                          * remove those which are not allowed from the input and print a warning message

After talking with our team and developers who use the ORCID Registry data we’ve decided to remove all support for html tags. This makes the data much easier to parse, but we’ve set the biography field to recognize line breaks to help with formatting.

Thanks for bringing this inconsistent behavior to our attention. This is a bug in our system and our developers are currently working on fixing it so HTML tags are consistently rendered.
